Zada Brock 95 GRAND ISLAND – Zada J. Brock, 95, of Grand Island, died Thursday, Aug. 5, 2021, at Emerald Nursing & Rehab Lakeview in Grand Island. Memorial services will be at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Curran Funeral Chapel. Deb Ritchie will officiate. Inurnment will be in the Grand Island City Cemetery. Zada was born Sept. 21, 1925, at Harrold, S.D., the daughter of Melvin L. and Carrie (Husted) Barnes. She grew up and received her education in Harrold. She then attended college in Aberdeen, S.D. and later worked at the Capitol Building in Pierre, S.D. She was united in marriage to Kenneth L. Brock on Dec. 11, 1949, at Harrold, S.D. The couple lived and farmed in Harrold until 1957, when they moved to Canton, S.D., where they farmed, raised cattle and pigs and milked cows. Zada also worked at Molstad Drug Store. In 1974, they moved to Mitchell, S.D. where the couple began training thoroughbred race horses. In 1976, the family moved to Grand Island and continued to follow the Nebraska and South Dakota horseracing circuit until retiring in 2008. Zada spent many hours with all her grandchildren. She enjoyed flowers, playing dominoes and race horse rummy, watching games shows and keeping track of the daily weather. She was also an excellent cook and apple pie baker. Zada attended the United Congregational Church in Grand Island. She is survived by her children, Mary Jane Brock of Aurora, Randy Brock of Doniphan and Linda Peers of Grand Island; five grandchildren, Mindy and Joe Crocker, Samantha Robb, Carrie Robb, Matthew Brock and Amanda Brock; ten great-grandchildren, Morgan, Jordan, Ashton, Zarissa, Duane, J.J., Austin, Jace, Oaklon and Bronx; sister, Zelma Dean of Sioux Falls, S.D.; brothers and sisters-in-law, Raymond Barnes of Huron, S.D., Kenneth and Judy Barnes of Boyne City, MI, Virginia Barnes of Pierre, S.D. and Eldora Barnes of Harrold, S.D. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Kenneth Brock on March 7, 2013; and three brothers, Marvin Barnes, Rollin Barnes and Chester Barnes. Memorials are suggested to the family's choice.
