Obituary

William K. Bill Edwards, 79, of Grand Island, Nebraska, died Thursday, March 31, 2011, at Tiffany Square Care Center. Services will be Monday, April 4, 2011, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Marys Cathedral. The Rev. Francis T. Curran, Rev. Mark A. Maresh, and Rev. Martin L. Egging will concelebrate. Burial will be in Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be Sunday, April 3, 2011, from 4 7 p.m. at Curran Funeral Chapel with a vigil service at 7:00 p.m. Curran Funeral Chapel is assisting the family. Bill was born August 5, 1931, at Superior, Nebraska. He was the son of Clifford H. & Myrtle Mary (Kline) Edwards. He is preceded in death by two daughters, Mary Beth Edwards & Lynette Brooks. Survivors of the immediate family include his wife of 61 years Carmelita Carmie Edwards of Grand Island, NE Three sons & two daughters-in-law, William & Cara Edwards of Dallas, TX Martin & Ellen Edwards of Dallas, TX David Edwards of Texarkana, Arkansas Two brothers & a sister-in-law, Cliff Edwards of Grand Island, NE Jack & Shirley Edwards of Aurora, CO Seven Grandchildren & one great granddaughter. Bill was raised in southern Nebraska, and after attending high school in Grand Island, he married his loving and devoted wife, Carmelita Rose on September 1, 1949, in Aurora, NE. Throughout most of his career, Bills profession as country club manager, found him at various locations in the U.S., Colorado, Wyoming, Arkansas, Mississippi and eventually back to Nebraska. In 1987, Bill and Carmie returned to Grand Island where Bill managed the Knights of Columbus. In his pursuit of excellence in club management, Bill completed course work at University of Denver, Rice & Drake Universities. He enjoyed owning and riding motorcycles and horses, played golf to a 9 handicap, was a skilled pistol and rifle marksman, and enjoyed woodworking. But his most passionate pursuit was as an airplane pilot, where he achieved a multi-engine instrument rating commercial license and had charter pilot status. He was a member of St. Marys Cathedral, past Parish Council President, 4th Degree Grand Knight in the Grand Island Knights of Columbus. He was preceded in death by his parents, daughters, Mary Beth Edwards & Lynette Brooks, one brother, Keith, and two sisters, Ann Menze & Mary Dezell.
