Obituary

OBIT: WILLIAM B. VANIS William B. Bill Vanis, 54, of Grand Island, NE, died Tuesday, December 28, 2010, at Valley County Health System, in Ord, NE, as the result of an accident. Services will be Monday, January 3, 2010, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Marys Cathedral. The Rev. Michael F. McDermott will officiate. Mr. Vanis will be cremated after the service and private family inurnment will be at a later date in the Grand Island City Cemetery. Visitation will be Sunday, from 4 7 p.m. at Curran Funeral Chapel with a vigil service at 7 p.m. Curran Funeral Chapel is assisting with arrangements. Bill was born March 30, 1956, at David City, Nebraska. He was the son of Harry J. & Lucille M. (Helgoth) Vanis. Survivors include his wife, Maureen Vanis of Grand Island, NE One daughter & son-in-law, Lindsay & Mitch Hinrichs of Grand Island, NE One son, Taylor Vanis & special friend Kelsey Parr both of Grand Island, NE One step-daughter & son-in-law, Shelley & Fred Eickhoff of Grand Island, NE One step-son, Dustin Hansen of Grand Island, NE Mother, Lucille Vanis of St. Libory, NE One brother, Don Vanis of St. Paul, NE Three sisters & brothers-in-law, LuAnn & Ken Magwire of Eagle River, AK Vicki & Doug Wallace of North Platte, NE Jeanne & Bob Prince of Grand Island, NE Others left to cherish his memory include his four grandchildren, Kaleigh & Logan Hinrichs, Faith & Grace Eickhoff, many aunts, uncles, nieces & nephews and longtime friend, Arvid Carlson of Grand Island, NE Bill moved to St. Libory as a young child and graduated from Northwest High School in 1974. He worked at Union Pacific Railroad for one year before beginning his career with Case New Holland. He married Vicki Magwire in January of 1978, at Grand Island, NE. He married Maureen (OMalley) Hansen on May 4, 2002, at Grand Island, NE. They lived in Grand Island. At the time of his death Bill was completing his 35th year with Case New Holland. He loved time spent with his family, children & grandchildren. He was an outdoor enthusiast. He loved hunting, fishing, golfing, just being in the out-of-doors and was an avid Husker football fan. He was a member of Resurrection Catholic Church. He was preceded in death by his father, Harry, grandparents, William & Agnes Vanis, Charles & Katherine Helgoth. In lieu of flowers memorials are suggested to the familys choice. Bonnie Kool was the organist for Mr. Vanis's service and the Resurrection Parish Men's Group provided the vocals for the service. The song selections were; "Join In Dance" ~ "We Will Rise Again" ~ "Lord You Have Come" ~ "You Are Mine" ~ "Lead Me Lord" Active Casketbearers were; Doug Ward ~ Harold Green ~ Mike Myers ~ Dax Carlson ~ Bob Helgoth ~ Bob Prince ~ Kent Stauffer. Honorary Casketbearer was Arvid Carlson.
