Virginia A. Schafer, 86, of Grand Island, NE, died Friday, March 22, 2019, at Heritage at Sagewood, in Grand Island, NE. Mass of Christian Burial will be Saturday, March 30, 2019, at 10:00 a.m. at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church. The Rev. Martin L. Egging will be the celebrant. Interment will be in Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be Friday, March 29, 2019, from 5 – 7 p.m. at Curran Funeral Chapel with a vigil service at 7 p.m. Memorials are suggested to Blessed Sacrament Catholic church. Curran Funeral Chapel is assisting the family.
Virginia was born July 22, 1932, in St. Paul, NE. the daughter of Ernest & Mary E. (McAndrews) Wissbaum.
Virginia grew up and received her education in the St. Paul area before moving to Albion. The family moved to Grand Island in 1941. She graduated from St. Mary's in 1950. She attended Marymount College in Saline, KS. graduating in 1954 with a BS in Biology. She served her medical technology internship at Minneapolis General from 1954-55. She worked at Midway Hospital in St. Paul, MN. from August of 1955 to February 1957 as a med tech. She moved back to Grand Island, NE. in 1957 and was employed with St. Francis Hospital from 1957 – 1970. She worked at Lutheran Hospital for nine years before joining the staff of the V.A Medical Center in October of 1979. She married Laurence "Larry" P. Schafer in Grand Island on May 29, 1982 and made their home there. She enjoyed reading, playing the piano, working crossword puzzles, and bingo. Her husband Larry died September 28, 2009.
She was a member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, and served in many capacities including, Blessed Sacrament Parish Choir, Eucharist Minister, Sacristan, and Bell Choir.
Virginia is survived by her sister, Joan Wissbaum of Olathe, KS

She is preceded in death by her parents, husband, Larry P. Schafer, brother; Francis C. Wissbaum & sister-in-law, Margie, sisters; Dorothy Mason and Gertrude "Trudy" Schwartz.
