Velma A. Hill, 98, of Wedgewood Care Center, died Tuesday, January 29, 2013, at Wedgewood. Services will be Saturday, February 2, 2013, at 10:00 a.m. at Curran Funeral Chapel. The Rev. Bob Rhodes will officiate. Mrs. Hill will be cremated following services. Inurnment will be at a later date in the Grand Island City Cemetery. Visitation will be Friday, February 1, 2013, from 4 7 p.m. at Curran Funeral Chapel.
Velma was born October 5, 1914, northwest of Johnson, NE on the family farm. She was the daughter of Julius & Emma (Goering) Hauberg.
Survivors of her immediate family include one daughter, Udine Hilderbrand of Grand Island, NE
A sister-in-law, Dorothy Hauberg of California
Grandchildren and their spouses, Debra & Jim Encinger, James & Jill Michel, Jay & Stacy Michel, Jack Hamill, Dale & Maureen Hilderbrand, Julie & John Hartford, Michelle Hilderbrand, Deanna & Joel Carlson, Traci Hilderbrand, and Mindy Hilderbrand.
Numerous great grandchildren and great great grandchildren, two nephews and a niece.
Velma grew up on the family farm in Johnson County, graduating from Johnson High School in 1933. She attended Grand Island Business College for one year. She married Ellsworth Tucker on March 21, 1934, at St. Paul, NE. They lived in Grand Island where Velma was a mother and homemaker. She began working at Walkins Drug Store as a cashier after her children were grown. She cared for Mr. Tucker until his death in March of 1964. She worked at Montgomery Wards Department Store as manager of the childrens department, retiring when she married Ezra Ike Hill, on May 13, 1973, at Grand Island. They lived in North Platte, NE for several years before returning to Grand Island. Mr. Hill died in December of 1990.
Velma enjoyed her family and loved attending her grandchildrens softball games. She especially enjoyed her yearly train trips to Las Vegas for vacation. She had a green thumb, growing beautiful vegetable gardens and especially loved tending to her flowers. She liked to fish, crochet and knitted blankets and afghans for all of her grandchildren.
She was a member of Trinity United Methodist for over 50 years, was a past member of the Does and Old Timers Club #16.
She was preceded in death by her husbands, a son, Dallas Tucker, a daughter, Lawanna Michel, a granddaughter, Shelly A. Hilderbrand, sisters, Esther Broady, Mildred Boellstorff, a brother, Harlan Hauberg.
