Thomas M. Tom Conlon, 67, of Grand Island, NE, died Wednesday, August 28, 2013, at St. Francis Medical Center. Mr. Conlons wishes were to be cremated. A memorial service will be Friday, September 6, 2013, at 1:00 p.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church, with a family prayer service at 12:45 p.m. The Rev. Jack Gillam will officiate. The family will greet friends from 5 7 p.m., Thursday, September 5, 2013, at Curran Funeral Chapel. Curran Funeral Chapel is assisting the family.
Tom was born August 17, 1946, at Kansas City, MO. He was the son of Frank L. and Edna (Kendall) Conlon.
Survivors of the immediate family include his wife, Faye Conlon of Grand Island, NE
One sister, Mary Ash of Fairbanks, AK
Others left to cherish his memory include his nieces and nephews whom he loved dearly.
Tom grew up in Omaha, NE graduating from Omaha North High School, June 4, 1964. He completed his Bachelor Degree and began his teaching career in Illinois. Tom traveled extensively overseas, touring Australia, Japan, India, Vietnam, Laos and England. Upon returning from his oversea travels, he was a tour bus driver for Greyhound Bus Line. In 1984 he met the love of his live, Faye Kumm, while driving a tour to New Orleans. He and Faye were married on February 21, 1989, in Grand Island, NE where they lived. Tom received his Masters in Public Administration from the University of Nebraska, Omaha in 1991. He was hired by Goodwill Industries of Greater Nebraska in 1991 as the Development Director, responsible for the development of public support for Goodwill. He was employed by Goodwill at the time of his death. He played an important role in the development of the Hornady sponsored Platte River Charity Shoot that celebrated its 21st year August 17th. Over the course of his time with Goodwill, over $3 Million in public support was raised to support Goodwills mission through annual campaigns and special events. Tom truly believed in the abilities of the people Goodwill serves.
Tom loved to travel, was an avid Husker football fan and die hard Yankees fan. He and Faye traveled to New York this summer walking the field of famed Yankee Stadium and rooting his Yankees on in several games. He considered himself a birder and was a member of several bird clubs. He loved looking out into his backyard, watching, listening and experiencing Mother Nature as God intended. He enjoyed golfing and was a movie lover.
He attended Trinity Lutheran Church, joined the Grand Island Kiwanis Club in 1990. He was Club President in 1995/1996, served on the Board for several years and was an active member at the time of his death, past Board Member and Volunteer for Jr. Achievement.
Memorials are suggested to the Thomas and Faye Conlon Fund within the Grand Island Community Foundation.
Tom was preceded in death by his parents, uncle and aunt, John and Nellie Conlon.
