Obituary

Shirley M. Smith, 77, of St. Paul, NE formerly of Greeley, NE, died Wednesday, March 02, 2011, at Heritage Living Center in St. Paul, NE. Services will be Saturday, March 5, 2011, at 10:30 a.m. at Sacred Heart Church in Greeley, NE. The Rev. Sidney B. Bruggeman will officiate. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery at Greeley, NE. Visitation will be from 4 7 p.m. Friday, March 4, 2011, at Sacred Heart Church with a Vigil Service at 7:00 p.m. Curran Funeral Chapel is assisting with arrangements. Shirley was born January 20, 1934, at Scotia, Nebraska. She was the daughter of Alfred S. & Altha M. (Peirson) Butcher. Survivors of the immediate family include three sons & two daughters-in-law: James Smith of St. Paul, NE and special friend Mary Casteel of Grand Island, NE Thomas & Kari Smith of Grand Island, NE Paul & Lisa Smith of Genoa, NE One Daughter: Karen & (James) Bernt of Greeley, NE Others left to cherish her memory include 15 grandchildren, Matthew Barry Smith, Matthew Clark Smith, Jeremiah Smith, Stuart Smith, Melissa Luby, Summer Smith, Shelby Smith, Robert Bonenberger, Lucas Bonenberger, Joshua Bernt, Jessica Murphy, Anthony Bernt, Josey Bernt, Dalton Smith, Jayden Smith. 19 Great-grandchildren. Shirley grew up in Greeley, Nebraska graduating from Greeley High School in 1950. She received her Teaching Certificate and taught grade school in rural Greeley. She later completed beauty school. She married Lawrence Fat E. Smith on November 12, 1952, at Greeley. They lived & farmed west of Greeley. After her children were grown, Shirley completed her schooling as a CMA, CNA and CDA. She was employed at Abels Care Home in St. Paul, NE and the Greeley Care Home. The couple moved to Grand Island in 1980 and Shirley was employed at Gordmans, the Nebraska Veterans Home, Interstate Holiday Inn and Northwest High School. They moved back to Greeley in 1985. Mr. Smith died May 31, 2001. Shirley was a member of Sacred Heart Church. She is welcomed into heaven by her parents, husband, Lawrence, son Matthew, great grandson, Nolan Murphy, brother, Harvey Butcher and sister, Vivian Merrill.
