Ruth W. Pokorney, 99, of Grand Island, NE died Tuesday, July 10, 2018, at CHI Health St. Francis Skilled Care Unit, with family at her side. Services will be Saturday, July 14, 2018, at 10:00 a.m. in the chapel of Curran Funeral Chapel. Fr. Thomas A. Ryan will officiate. Visitation with a closed casket will be Friday, July 13, 2018, from 4 – 7 p.m. at Curran Funeral Chapel. Private family burial will be in Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery. Curran Funeral Chapel is assisting the family. Ruth was born August 30, 1918, at Edgemont, SD. She is the daughter of Roy & Elizabeth (McAleer) Henry. Survivors of the immediate family include sons, Dan, David and Tom Pokorney all Grand Island, NE One daughter & son-in-law, Marcia & Brad Grim of Grand Island, NE Others left to cherish her memory include grandchildren, Daniel Jr., Greg, and Amber Pokorney, Tricia Hedglin, Linsey (Joel) Timen, Michael, Asia, and Arianna Grim, Jonathan Cook, Kapra (Keith) Schleichardt, 18 great grandchildren including Bennett Lambelet and Tommy O'Hara. Ruth grew up in Ardmore, SD, graduating from Ardmore High School in 1934. She moved with her family to Grand Island, NE in 1936. In 1939 she married Albert Pokorney at Hastings, NE. They lived in Grand Island where they raised their family. Ruth was employed at Vavra's Sausage Kitchen, Hinky Dinky, Bill's Trading Post, and the Lutheran Hospital. After retirement she was a caretaker for area families. Mr. Pokorney died in September of 1974. Ruth's children and grandchildren was her first and foremost priority. She was an avid reader, enjoyed playing cards, traveling with friends, and loved a good rodeo. She was a lifelong member of St. Mary's Cathedral. She is preceded in death by her husband, Albert Pokorney, one son, LeRoy Pokorney who died August 16, 2004, a grandson, Brian Pokorney, two sisters, Connie Mitchell, Eunice Argo, and three brothers, Don, Irvin, and Eugene Henry. In lieu of flowers memorials are suggested to Hope Harbor, Camille's Cupboard, Grand Island Crisis Center, or a food bank of your choice in Ruth's memory.
