Obituary

Rigoberto Mario Bermudez, age 73, loving husband, father, father-in-law, uncle, and grandfather passed away peacefully on September 7, 2012, at Provena Mercy Medical Center in Aurora, IL, surrounded by his loving family. Rigoberto was preceded in death by his mother, Caridad Herrera; his sister, Orfelina Fonteboa; and his brother, Andres Bermudez. Rigoberto will be dearly missed by his devoted wife, Mary Victoria Bermudez; his proud son, Bobby Bermudez Jr. and his wife, Loan Bermudez; his cherished daughter, Carrie Crowley and her husband, David Crowley; and all of his adoring grandchildren, David, Rob, Jaclyn, Michael, Hailey and Logan. Rigoberto was a professional jockey and had earned the respect and admiration of his fellow colleagues throughout the 17 years of his career. He launched his career as a jockey in Cuba and ended his career in Grand Island, Nebraska, the place where he considered his home for he met and fell in love with his wife, Mary, in this small town. Rigoberto won numerous races throughout his career starting with his very first win in Cuba on Trenton Sand in 1956. Rigoberto eventually left the race track and pursued a career in the casino industry. Rigoberto began his casino career in Atlantic City and after 22 years, retired from MGM Grand in Detroit as a Pit Manager in 2004. Rigoberto lived life to the fullest. He had always embraced life as vigorously and passionately as when he was a jockey in a race. To many of his friends, Rigoberto was considered a respectable and treasured friend. Rigoberto was a charismatic man and had made such a profound impression on those lives he touched. Services will be Saturday, September 15, 2012, at 10:00 a.m. at St. Marys Cathedral. The Rev. Richard L. Piontkowski Jr. will officiate. Rigoberto will be cremated following services. Visitation will be Friday, September 14, 2012, from 4 7 p.m. at Curran Funeral Chapel with a vigil service at 7:00 p.m. Curran Funeral Chapel is assisting the family.
