Obituary

Richard D. Dick Miner, 85, of Omaha, NE formerly of Grand Island, NE died Saturday, February 4, 2012, at Josie Harper Hospice House in Omaha with family by his side. Memorial services will be Saturday, February, 11, 2012, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Leos Catholic Church. The Rev. Charles L. Torpey will officiate. Military honors will be provided by the United Veterans Honor Guard. Private family inurnment will be at a later date in the Grand Island City Cemetery. There is no visitation; Mr. Miner bequeathed his remains to the Nebraska Anatomical Board. Curran Funeral Chapel is assisting the family. Dick was born October 11, 1926, at Grand Island, NE. He was the son of Glenn & Gertrude (McVey) Miner. Survivors of the immediate family include his wife of 65 years Marie Miner of Omaha, NE Three sons & two daughters-in-law, Richard & Jane (Armintrout) Miner of Omaha, NE William Miner of Lincoln, NE Daniel & Anne (Kennedy) Miner of Omaha, NE One daughter & son-in-law, Ann & Victor Covalt of Lincoln, NE Others left to cherish his memory include his seven grandchildren, Benjamin, Abraham, Andrew, Patrick & Matthew Miner and Madeliene and Emma Covalt, one great grandchild, Reign Covaltgray, three sisters-in-law, Sr. Bette Moslander, Margaret Thull and Louise Miner, and many nieces and nephews. Dick was raised in Grand Island, where he starred in football and track at Grand Island High School in the early 1940s. He served in the U.S. Navy as an electricians mate during World War II from 1944 to 1946. Dick married Marie Moslander in 1947 at St. Marys Cathedral. He was employed at Northwestern Bell Telephone, retiring in 1984 from the engineering department. During his 38 years with the telephone company, Dick worked in St. Paul, Fremont and Grand Island Nebraska, beginning as a linesman and completing his career as a project engineer. He was active in the Grand Island Christmas Cheer organization, serving as the Treasurer for 37 years. He was active in the Central Catholic High School Booster Club, serving as president for two years. Dick was also a member of the American Legion and the Century Link Pioneers. He enjoyed sports, travel, reading, cards, gardening and spending time with family. Memorials may be sent to the Grand Island Public Library Foundation or the Christmas Cheer at the Grand Island Independent. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Max, Robert and Hugh.
