Obituary

Paul J. Stobbe, 81, of Grand Island, Nebraska, died Saturday, May 24, 2014, at his home. Mass of the Christian Burial will be Thursday, May 29, 2014, at 10:00 a.m. at St. Marys Cathedral. The Rev. Richard L. Piontkowski Jr. will officiate. Burial will be in Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery. Military honors will be provided by the United Veterans Honor Guard and the U. S. Air Force Honor Team. Visitation will be Wednesday, May 28, 2014, from 4:00 7:00 p.m. at Curran Funeral Chapel with a vigil service at 7:00 p.m. Curran Funeral Chapel is assisting the family. Paul was born June 15, 1932, at Ashton, NE. He was the son of Dominic and Theresa (Wroblewski) Stobbe. Survivors of the immediate family include his wife of 51 years, Karen Stobbe of Grand Island, NE Two daughters and sons-in-law, Stephanie and Patrick Graves of Atlanta, GA Tami and Mark Taylor of Grand Island, NE One son and daughter-in-law, Tom and Kellie Stobbe of Omaha, NE Two sisters, Marge Sass of Hastings, NE Louise Borowski of Grand Island, NE Others left to cherish his memory include his grandchildren, John Patrick, Corley, and Katie Anne Graves, Taylor, Cole and Paige Stobbe, Braden, Ericah, and Kaylee Taylor. Paul grew up in Ashton, attending school there until moving with his family to Grand Island in 1945. He completed his high school education at St. Marys High School graduating in 1949. He was a phenomenal athlete while in high school, appreciating the lessons team sports taught him. He proudly passed those traits onto his children and grandchildren and relished watching the tradition continue. He entered the U.S. Air Force in 1949, serving until his honorable discharge in 1953. He returned to Grand Island and continued his education at Kearney State College on the G.I. Bill. He married Karen M. Mendenhall on June 23, 1962 at Grand Island, NE., where they made their home and raised their children. He was a member of St. Marys School Board having served as President while his children were young. Paul taught school at Central City, NE, for a short time before taking a position at the G. I. School of Business. He was employed at Central Community College retiring in 1999, as Director of Recruiting. Paul was a faith filled man and instilling such values in his children was a must. He enjoyed time spent with his family, following his grandchildrens school and sporting events. He was an avid horseracing fan, enjoyed playing cards and could fix just about anything. He was a member of St. Marys Cathedral, American Legion, and Saddle Club. Memorials are suggested to St. Marys Cathedral. Paul is welcomed into heaven by his parents, a son Doug Stobbe, June 23, 2005, and three sisters, Phyllis Johnson, JoAnn Koegsman and Dorothy Pomroy.
