Obituary

Orrin Joseph O.J. Armatys, 70, of Grand Island, Nebraska, died Monday, February 03, 2014, at his home. Services will be, Saturday, February, 8, 2014, at 10:00 a.m. at St. Leos Catholic Church. The Rev. Charles L. Torpey will officiate. Burial will be in the Grand Island City Cemetery. Military honors will be provided by the United Veterans Honor Guard. Visitation will be Friday, February 7, 2014, from 4 7 p.m. at St. Leos, with a vigil service at 7:00 p.m. Curran Funeral Chapel is assisting the family. O.J was born February 18, 1943, at Pasadena, CA. He was the son of Leo J. and Dorothy E. (Power) Armatys. Survivors of the immediate family include his wife, Ruth Armatys of Grand Island, NE One son and daughter-in-law, Greg and Kris Armatys of Waverly, NE One daughter and son-in-law, Jill and Scott Gorneau of South Portland, ME Two sisters and a brother-in-law, Cynthia Rutledge and her significant other Smokey Vandergrift of Oak Creek, CO Anthonette and Don Hosman of Steamboat Springs, CO Three brothers and sisters-in-law, Anthony and Sally Armatys of Central City, NE Bryan and Karen Armatys of Ratan, NM Walter and Gail Armatys of Richmond, TX Others left to cherish his memory include his grandchildren, Benjamin Armatys, William Armatys, Aidan Gorneau and Nola Gorneau, many nieces, nephews, and cousins. O.J. moved with his family to Central City, NE, at 9 months of age when his father was deployed during WWII. He attended Central City Public Schools graduating in 1961. He served in the U.S. Army from June of 1965 until March of 1967, spending one year in Vietnam before his honorable discharge. He returned to Grand Island where he was hired as the first full- time ambulance attendant for the City of Grand Island. He was joined in marriage to Ruth Schaaf on January 17, 1970, at Emmet, NE. They lived in Grand Island and in 1983 he transferred to the Utilities Department where he worked as a power plant operator until his retirement in 2005. O.J. enjoyed yard work, biking, jogging, fixing whatever needed fixed and keeping his cars clean, especially his Corvette. He was a member of St. Leos Catholic Church, the American Legion, and retired member of IBEW #1597. He was preceded in death by his parents, infant sisters, Mary and Margaret Armatys.
