Obituary

Norbert L. "Bert" Matousek, 91, of Lincoln, NE former lifelong Grand Island resident died Sunday, December 10, 2023, at The Grace Space Hospice in Lincoln, NE. Mass of Christian burial will be Friday, December 22, 2023, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Leo's Catholic Church. The Rev. Donald A. Buhrman will be the celebrant assisted by Deacon William Buchta. Interment will be in Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery. Military honors will be rendered by the United Veterans Honor Guard and the U.S. Air Force Honor Team. Visitation will be Thursday, December 21, 2023 from 5 – 7 p.m. at Curran Funeral Chapel with a vigil service at 7 p.m. In lieu of flowers memorials are suggested to St. Leo's Catholic Church or Grand Island Central Catholic. Your thoughts and prayers may be given at www.curranfuneralchapel.com under Bert's obituary. Curran Funeral Chapel is assisting the family. Bert was born May 8, 1932, in St. Paul, NE. The son of Louie and Cecilia (Nosal) Matousek. He grew up in St. Paul until moving with his family to Grand Island in 1949. He graduated from Grand Island Sr. High School in 1950. Bert entered the United States Air Force on July 31, 1951 serving until his honorable discharge on July 30, 1955. Bert returned to Grand Island working for his father building homes. He married Lorraine O'Neill on June 22, 1957 at St. Mary's Cathedral in Grand Island, NE. They lived in Grand Island. Bert had a route for Pepsi for several years before accepting a position with the State of Nebraska. He later worked for Benjamin & Associate/Grand Island Testing Lab as a lab technician testing soil and concrete until retiring in 1994. Bert was a handyman. He could fix anything. He enjoyed woodworking, and shooting pool several nights a week on pool league. He enjoyed following his children and grandchildren school and sporting events. He was a founding family and charter member of St. Leo's Catholic Church and a Eucharistic minister. Bert was a 3rd Degree Knights of Columbus and for years spearheaded their annual Christmas Eve turkey dinner. Bert is survived by his three sons and two daughters-in-law, Ron and Barb Matousek of Omaha, NE Rick and Rhonda Matousek of Ogallala, NE Dan Matousek of Lincoln, NE Daughter and son-in-law, Lori and David Hansmeyer of Firth, NE Grandchildren and their spouses, Janelle and Kurt Nielsen, J.J. and Andrea Matousek, Andrea and Jeff Eastman, Matt Matousek, Gage Hansmeyer, Savannah Schmitt, Atlee Hansmeyer, and 11 great grandchildren. Brother-in-law, Jim Logsdon of Lincoln, NE Bert is preceded in death by his parents, sister and brother-in-law, Mae and Frank Zimmerer, and sister-in-law, Lee Logsdon.
