Nicholas L. Merten, 83, of Grand Island, died Thursday, October 16, 2014, at Golden Living Center Lakeview. Graveside services will be Monday, October 20, 2014, at 11:00 a.m. at Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery. The Rev. Tom Ryan will officiate. Curran Funeral Chapel is assisting the family. Mr. Merten was born May 19, 1931, at Albion Nebraska, the son of Nicholas H. and Susan J. (Worth) Merten. Survivors of the immediate family include his wife, Nancy L. Merten of Grand Island, NE Three sons and daughters-in-law, David C. and Virginia Jean Merten of St. Joseph, MO Nick K. and Nancy Merten of Grand Island, NE Paul J. and Becky Merten of Lathrop, MO Two stepsons, William Buzz L. Moody of Perrysburg, OH Victor J. Moody of San Antonio, TX Two stepdaughters and a step son-in-law, Katherine A. Moody of Colorado Springs, CO Tammera S. and Kenneth Howell of Grand Island, NE Others left to cherish his memory include his 14 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren. Nick grew up and received his education in Albion, Nebraska graduating for Albion High School in 1949. He married Carol Barr on July 31, 1950 in Fullerton, Nebraska. He then moved to North Platte, Nebraska and was employed with Swift and the Chevy Garage. He moved to Grand Island, Nebraska in 1952 working for Diers Motors as a body repairman for 3 years. He later worked for Kenmans as an auto detailer and mechanic until his health required him to retire in August of 1970. He married Nancy L. (Kubicek) Moody on August 21, 1982 in Grand Island, Nebraska. Nick enjoyed woodworking, gardening and his honey dos. He is preceded in death by his parents, a daughter, Kathy Gosda, brothers, Harold, Charlie, Henry, LeRoy, sisters, Alvira, Agnes, Viola, Monica, Gertrude, Henrietta, Elizabeth, and Genevieve.
