Obituary

Maureen A. Smollen, 90 of Grand Island, NE died Saturday, August 3, 2024 at Tiffany Square Care Center in Grand Island.  Maureen was born in rural Greeley County, Nebraska on February 25, 1934 to Maurice and Margaret (Donnelly) Nealon.  The family moved to Aurora, NE and Maureen graduated from Aurora High School in 1951.   She married Al Smollen October 1, 1955, at St. Mary's Catholic Church, in Aurora NE.  Maureen worked at the Nebraska Veterans Home for more than 20 years as a Physical Therapy Assistant.  After retirement she spent several years volunteering her time working Bingo at Blessed Sacrament Church and at the Blessed Sacrament Parish Thrift Store.

Maureen is survived by her husband of 68 years Al, children and grandchildren Mike (Karen) Smollen, Lia, Alana and Rebecca Smollen, Theresa (Jim) Hansen, Erik (Kayla) Hansen, Sean (Eva Warren) Hansen and Jeremy (Kendal Woodring) Hansen, Son-in Law James Sizemore, Julie (Charles) Bolden and Annie (Justin) McMillan, Karen (Scott) Hooper, Tyler (Maddie) Hooper and Morgan Hooper, Gary Smollen, Son Luca Smollen, and John (Mindy Hilderbrand) Smollen, 10 great grandchildren, Marley, Camey, Zak and Jenova Hansen, Holly and Trey Bolden, Camden, Abby and Jaelyn McMillian, and Charlotte Hooper, Brother-in-Law Mick Pohlmeier, many nieces, nephews, and extended family members.

She is preceded in death by her parents Maurice and Margaret, daughter Dianne Sizemore, great grandson Van Hansen, sisters and brother in laws Marcella (Paul) Murphy, AnnaMarie (Ray) Grudzinski, Alice (Frank) Smollen, Helen (Joe) Mudloff, Rita (Bill) Boeck, Betty Pohlmeier, and Debbie Taylor Eckstrom (Howard Taylor, Walt Eckstrom).

Mass of Christian Burial will be Friday, August 9, 2024, at 10:00 a.m. at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church. Interment will be in the Grand Island City Cemetery, with luncheon to follow in the Jubilee Center at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church. Visitation will be Thursday, August 8, 2024, from 4 – 6 p.m. at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, with a vigil service at 6 p.m.  Memorials are suggested to Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church or Grand Island Central Catholic Grade/High School.  Your thoughts and prayers may be given at www.curranfuneralchapel.com under Maureen's obituary.  Curran Funeral Chapel is assisting the family.
