Obituary

Maureen Kathryn Donlin was born on April 2, 1943, in Atkinson, Nebraska to Elmer and Kathryn (Barnes) Schaaf. She passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family at The Monarch in Lincoln, Nebraska, on Wednesday, March 17, 2021. Maureen grew up in Emmet, Nebraska on the Schaaf Family farm. She attended school in Emmet before going to high school in O'Neill, Nebraska at O'Neill High. There, she met the love of her life, Larry Donlin. They were married on November 12, 1960. Both Larry and Maureen graduated from O'Neill High School in 1961. They just celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary in November. 5 children were born into the family; Linda, Larry Dean, Michele, Pamela, and Jenny. Larry and Maureen raised their family around Central City, Marquette, and Aurora, Nebraska. While raising her family, Maureen worked at Cornhusker Army Ammunition Plant, Safeway in Central City, Valley View Country Club in Central City, and the Aurora Hospital. In addition to working and raising their family, Maureen and Larry also spent their lives operating Donlin Racing Stables, where they trained and raced horses at Fonner Park in Grand Island. Last March, Larry was inducted to the Nebraska Racing Hall of Fame, thanks in part to Maureen! Training and racing horses was the center of their lives and it took them to many places including Columbus, Lincoln and Omaha in Nebraska, along with Chicago, IL, Hot Springs, AR, and Minneapolis, MN, just to name a few. During the last week of Maureen's life, she said "I'll see you at the races!" Maureen loved being a grandma and a great-grandma. She often bragged about how many grands and great-grands that she had. She loved to bake her famous banana bread in tin cans. After surviving a double brain aneurysm in 2015, Maureen was still able to bake banana bread. Maureen is preceded in death by her parents, one brother, Bernard, and two great-granddaughters, Audrina Williams and Peyton Abbott. Left to cherish Maureen's memory is her husband Larry of Grand Island, children Linda (Rick) Engel of Edmond, OK, Larry Dean (Gretchen) Donlin of Gretna, NE, Michele Donlin of Edmond, OK, Pam (Kelly) Von Hemel of Pleasant Hill, IA, and Jenny Obermeier of Grand Island, 16 grandchildren, and 25 great-grandchildren.
