Obituary
Mary V. Garner Mills, 82, of Grand Island, NE died Saturday at her home surrounded by her family. Mary's wish was to be cremated and a private family inurnment will be at a later date. Mary was born September 28, 1938, in Henderson, Ky. She was the daughter of Mac D. and Virginia M. (Kennedy) Summers. She grew up in Henderson graduating from Barrett High School in 1955. She married Darril V. Garner in 1956. This union was blessed with five children, Thomas, Alan, Debra, Gregory, and Dreama. Mary worked as a cashier at Onederras and City Market, and night auditor at the old Holiday Inn. In 1981 Mary married William R. Mills in Rawlins, WY. They moved to Grand Island where Mary was a switchboard supervisor for the Grand Island Veteran's Home retiring in 2010 after 27 years of service.
Mary enjoyed playing Sudoku and board games, watching true crime and judge shows, and her lunch dates with her dear friend Sandy Rodewald. She cherished her Shih Tzu dog, Barney, who protected her to the end. Mary especially loved being a mother, grandmother, and great grandmother.
She will be missed by her children, Alan D. (Terri) Garner of Laramie, WY
Debra L. (Ron) Garner VanWyhe of Bailey, CO
Gregory D. (Marnie) Garner of Rawlins, WY
Dreama A. (Chris) Rockwood of Grand Island, NE
Brother, Carl "Mack" Summers of Evansville, IN
Others left to cherish her memory include her 13 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.
Mary was preceded in death by her parents, a son Thomas E. Garner, and a sister, Nancy Caine.
