Obituary

Mary Lou (Labenz) Vokoun Miller, 80, of Omaha, NE formerly of Grand Island, NE left us peacefully to meet her heavenly Father on February 14, 2025.  Her life was devoted to her family and career as a compassionate registered nurse. Visitation will be Wednesday, February 19, 2025, from 9 - 10 AM at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church with a rosary recited at 10 AM.  Mass of Christian burial will immediately follow the rosary.  Rev. Robin Bashir will celebrate the funeral mass.  Interment will be in Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery.  Memorials are suggested to the family with designation at a later date.  Your thoughts and prayers may be given at www.curranfuneralchapel.com under Mary's obituary.  Curran Funeral Chapel is assisting the family.

Mary Lou was born February 13, 1945, in Humphrey, Nebraska, the first of five children born to Alfred and Mary (Ternus) Labenz.

Mary Lou graduated with honors in 1963 from Central Catholic High School, Grand Island.  Even during her high school years, she demonstrated her caring nature, working as a nurse's aide at Grand Island's Lutheran Memorial Hospital.  She went on to graduate from St. Francis School of Nursing and embarked on a distinguished nursing career spanning over 40 years.  Her professional journey took her to the VA Hospital in Minnesota where she served veterans with dedication and empathy.  She later returned to Grand Island where she retired from the VA Medical Center.  Beyond her hospital work, Mary Lou served as a parish nurse at Blessed Sacrament Church, further demonstrating her commitment to caring for others in her community.  She touched the lives of countless individuals.

As a mother, Mary Lou was loving and supportive of her children Lesa (Rob) White, Trayci (Shawn) Turechek, and Jeffrey (Carolien) Vokoun. She is survived by grandchildren Tiana (Sam) Gidley, Abigail White, Nevaeh Phillips and Theo Vokoun, and by her sisters Barbara Labenz, Jean (Stan) Hoge, Richard (Janet) Labenz. She was preceded in death by her first husband Stephen Vokoun and her second husband Thomas Miller, her parents and brother Patrick Labenz.
