Obituary

Mary Delores "Lola" Briseno, a beloved matriarch and lifelong resident of Grand Island, Nebraska, passed away peacefully on January 23, 2025. Born on June 13, 1933, the daughter of Manuel and Victoria (Torres) Ramirez.  Lola attended local schools and furthered her education at the Grand Island School of Business and Community College. On July 3, 1954, she married her devoted husband, John Sr., whom she called 'Johnny' lovingly (most of the time), at St. Mary's Cathedral.

Lola worked at Twin Rivers, The Ordnance Plant, the Post Office, Monfort, and Grand Island Public Schools, forming lasting friendships along the way. She had a strong work ethic and took great pride in everything she did.

A talented athlete, Lola played semi-professional softball as a pitcher and center fielder. She enjoyed golfing, gardening, bowling, and playing cards with loved ones. Lola also loved shopping for bargains and spending time at Fonner Park, making memories at the racetrack with Johnny, friends, and family. Together, they shared a love for travel, attending Nebraska football bowl games and visiting destinations like Hawaii and Puerto Vallarta.

More than anything, Lola cherished her family. She was a proud and loving mother who found joy in watching her family grow and celebrating their milestones. Her grandchildren adored her, and she never missed a chance to cheer them on in sports and life. Lola's kitchen was the heart of the family, where she lovingly passed down cherished recipes and traditions.

Lola's kindness knew no bounds—she was always willing to help those in need. Her warm heart, contagious laugh, and witty personality brought joy to all who knew her. She especially loved spending time and laughing with her sisters.  She loved to visit family and often took her grandchildren on these trips creating treasured memories.

Lola is survived by her husband of 71 years, John Sr.; her children, Victoria "Vicky" Hruby, John Jr. Briseno (Julie), Ann Hansen (Wes), and Roxanne Dillion (Mike); 11 grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren, with another on the way; 1 great-great-grandchild; three sisters; and many cherished nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Victoria and Manuel Ramirez; her beloved brother, Mario Ramirez; her in-laws, Rosalio and Maria Briseno; many dear brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law; and her son-in-law, Jeff Hruby.

A celebration of Lola's life will be held on Tuesday, January 28, 2025, from 5-7 p.m. at Curran Funeral Chapel, followed by a vigil service at 7 p.m.  Friends and family are invited to share their favorite stories at the visitation.  Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday, January 29, 2025, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Mary's Cathedral. Rev. Jorge Canela and Rev. Donald A. Buhrman will concelebrate the funeral mass.  Interment will be in the Grand Island City Cemetery.  Memorials are suggested to the family to be designated at a later date.  Your thoughts and prayers may be given at www.curranfuneralchapel.com under Lola's obituary.  Curran Funeral Chapel is assisting the family.
