She was the daughter of Walter and Mabel (Tobin) Hermes. She was raised in Davenport until moving to Tennessee and then to Grand Island. Her senior year, she attended Grand Island Senior High and earned the nickname "Tennessee" because of her accent. Mary Jane was a gifted designer and worked for Strikers Florist, where she designed and arranged all the flowers for her and Robert E. Lee's wedding on August 13, 1952, at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Grand Island, NE. They lived in Grand Island where they raised an active family. Mary Jane and Robert managed Hight's Drive Inn, and owned/operated Big John's and Lee's Family Restaurant. She was also a full-time "Avon Lady," selling Avon door to door and from the restaurant, for over 40 years. Mary Jane built special relationships with all her customers and treated everyone like family. She had a beautiful voice and loved to sing, watch and attend musicals. She was a past member of Mother Singers, and many choirs at Blessed Sacrament, was active in Right to Life and attended many retreats at monasteries. She enjoyed traveling, especially to Jerusalem. There was always an abundance of love between her and her family. There was much to our Janie. She was so intelligent and had a variety of accomplishments from winning speech contests, starring in plays, singing in choirs, and winning many national Avon representative awards. She is survived by her children, Carol Lee, Mary Lee, Ann Richardson, Paul Lee, Scott Lee, Jay (Marcia) Lee, all of Grand Island, NE, sister, Ann (Steve) Rosenblatt of Omaha, NE, eight grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.
