Obituary

Marilyn D. Arrants, 69, of Grand Island, NE, died Friday, January 6, 2017, at her home surrounded by her loving family. Mass of Christian Burial will be Thursday, January 12, 2017, at 11:00 a.m. at Resurrection Catholic Church. The Rev. Thomas A. Ryan will be the celebrant. Marilyn will be cremated following the funeral mass. Private family inurnment will be at a later date in the Grand Island City Cemetery. Visitation will be Wednesday, January 11, 2017, from 4 – 7 p.m. at Curran Funeral Chapel with a vigil service at 7 p.m. Curran Funeral Chapel is assisting the family. Marilyn was born January 16, 1947, at Kearney, Nebraska. She was the daughter of Charles S. and Patricia J. (Rhoades) Lucas. Survivors of her immediate family include her husband of 49 years, Donald Arrants of Grand Island, NE Sons and daughters-in-law, Steve and Shelley Arrants of Grand Island, NE Christopher and Alison Arrants of Rock Springs, WY Ben and Melanie Arrants of Grand Island, NE Daughters, Dana Arrants of Grand Island, NE Kara Arrants of Grand Island, NE Brothers and sister-in-law, Kent Lucas and Cindy Powell of Kearney, NE Gary Lucas of Boston, MA Charles Paul Lucas of Leavenworth, KS Sisters and brothers-in-law, Robyn Stover of Kearney, NE Patty and Les Ottman of Grand Island, NE Laura and Roger Lea of McCool Junction, NE Others left to cherish her memory include her grandchildren, Josh, Bo, Brody, Josie, Dane, Savannah, Alexis, Bella, Luca and Harper. Marilyn grew up in Kearney attending St. James Elementary School and graduating from Kearney Catholic High School in 1965. She attended Marymount College in Salina, KS for a year, completing her Bachelor Degree in 1970 and Master's Degree in 1978, at Kearney State College. Marilyn married Donald L. Arrants on June 10, 1967, at Kearney, Nebraska. She began her teaching career at R-5 just outside of Holdrege, NE. In 1970 she taught grade school at Ravenna Public School. In 1974 she was a substitute teacher for the Overton School District. In 1976 she moved to Grand Island and began teaching for the Grand Island Public School system as an elementary teacher at Shoemaker Elementary School. Marilyn was known for taking her students to TCBY Yogurt for a dish of frozen yogurt for their birthday. She also had an enormous collection of coffee mugs given to her by her past students. Marilyn considered her education one of her best decisions in life, next to marrying her husband Donald. She loved teaching and loved her students. Marilyn celebrated her friends by hosting a Tea Party annually, it was an event they all loved to attend and enjoyed immensely. Marilyn was a prolific reader, passionate writer of poetry, having several of her works published by The International Library of Poetry. She loved listening to classical music and was her children and grandchildren's biggest fan. She especially loved her Saturday's spent watching softball tournaments and wrestling tournaments. She was a member of Resurrection Catholic Church, the Nebraska State Education Association, and Retired Teachers Association. She was preceded in death by her parents and a grandson, Landon Arrants. A scholarship fund will be established for Shoemaker Alumni in Marilyn's name. Thoughts and prayers may be given at www.curranfuneralchapel.com under Marilyn's name. Visitation
