Maria R. "Mary" Puente, 83, of Grand Island, NE died Monday, August 27, 2018, at her home with family by her side. Mass of Christian burial will be Friday, August 31, 2018 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Mary's Cathedral. The Rev. James R. Golka will be the celebrant. Interment will be in Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be Thursday, August 30, 2018, from 4 – 7 p.m. at Curran Funeral Chapel with a vigil service at 7:00 p.m. Curran Funeral Chapel is assisting the family. Mary was born January 6, 1935, at Grand Island, Nebraska. She was the daughter of Manuel A. and Juana (Guererro) Puente. Survivors of the immediate family include four sisters and three brothers-in-law, Connie Puente of Grand Island, NE Carmen Luna of Grand Island, NE Virginia (Richard) Soto of Wood River, NE Teresa Marie (Richard) Brown of Omaha, NE Jim Nelson of Grand Island, NE Two brothers and three sisters-in-law, Ramona Puente of Omaha, NE Manuel (Josie) Puente of Grand Island, NE Andrew (Nancy) Puente of Grand Island, NE Her friend Sandy Sevy of Grand Island, NE Her two dogs, Carita and Katarie and numerous nieces and nephews. Mary grew up in Grand Island, attending Grand Island Sr. High School. She graduated from Grand Island Beauty School, later working in several local beauty shops. She enjoyed cooking, crafts, painting, sewing, and her garden flowers. Mary was an active member of St. Mary's Cathedral, volunteering as a Religious Education teacher for the past 13 years. She also helped with the church's rummage sale, monthly friendship luncheon, decorating the church throughout the year, and volunteered at the Blessed Sacrament Thrift Store and Mary's Closet in St. Mary's Cathedral. Memorials are suggested to St. Mary's Cathedral or EWTN. Mary was preceded in death by her parents, one sister, Emily Nelson, brothers, Phillip, Tom, and John Puente.
