LeRoy J. Stegman, 91, of Grand Island passed away on Wednesday, April 16, 2025, at the VA Hospital in Grand Island, NE. Mass of Christian burial will be Thursday, April 24, 2025, at 10:00 a.m. at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church. The Rev. Robin Bashir and Rev. Sidney B. Bruggeman will celebrate the funeral mass. Interment will be in Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery. Military honors rendered by the United Veterans Honor Guard and the U.S. Army Honor Team. Visitation will be Wednesday, April 23, 2025, from 4 – 6 p.m. at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church with a vigil service at 6 p.m. Memorials are suggested to Grand Island Central Catholic in LeRoy's memory. LeRoy was born on October 20, 1933, on the family farm at Loretto, Rush County Kansas to Andrew and Lucy (Sulzman) Stegman. He was one of nine children. LeRoy attended grade school at St. Mary's Grade School in Loretto, Kansas. After grade school, he attended St. Gregory's Seminary in Shawnee, Oklahoma for two years before returning home and graduating from Victoria High School in Victoria, Kansas in 1952. He worked on the family farm after high school. LeRoy and Bernadette dated for a short time before LeRoy was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1954 where he served in the 2nd Infantry Division during the Korean War Period and was discharged in 1956. After serving in the Army, he attended Brown Mackie College on the GI Bill, in Salina, Kansas, graduating with a degree in Accounting and Business and also reconnected with his future wife. After graduation, he started working at Massey Ferguson Company for twelve years in Great Bend and Hutchinson, Kansas and was transferred to Grand Island, Nebraska in 1962 as the accountant. In 1969 he started working for the Nebraska Veteran's Home as the Business Office and Accounting Manager and retired after thirty years.
On August 23, 1958, he married Bernadette Werth at St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Schoenchen, Kansas and together they had seven children.
LeRoy loved his faith. He was a member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus and DAV. LeRoy and his wife taught CCD and were members of the Social Committee, monthly Prime Time Senior Citizens Dinner committee and was chairman with his wife for funeral dinners for 25 years. He was also a Little League baseball coach, Boy Scout leader, Cub Scout troop master and helped at Central Catholic High School with concessions.
LeRoy is survived by his wife Bernadette. His children: Brenda (Jerome) Schoel of Salina, Kansas; Terry (Judy) Stegman of Montgomery, Alabama; Deb Tines of North Platte, Gary (Rogene) Stegman of Gretna, Mary (Chad) Baker of Lincoln, Mark (Melissa) Stegman of Grand Island and Matthew (Meredith) of Lincoln, his sisters Bernie Wiewel of Russell, Kansas and Evelyn Alexander of Wichita, Kansas. He is also survived by numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren.
LeRoy is preceded in death by grandchildren, Jason Schoel and Elizabeth Stegman, brothers and sisters-in-law, Gerald (Erma) Stegman, Ray (Inez) Stegman, Melvin (Evelyn) Stegman, Donald Stegman, Harold Stegman, brothers-in-law, Jim Alexander and Joseph Wiewel.
