Obituary

Leona L. Bydalek, 85, of Grand Island, NE, died Tuesday, March 30, 2010, at St. Francis Medical Center. Services will be Monday, April 5, 2010, at 10:00 a.m. at St. Marys Cathedral. The Rev. Harold R. Kurtenbach will officiate. Burial will be in Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be Sunday, April, 4, 2010, from 4 7 p.m. at Curran Funeral Chapel with a Vigil Service at 7 p.m. Curran Funeral Chapel is assisting with arrangements. Leona was born November 30, 1924, at Loup City, Nebraska. She was the daughter of George & Alma (Thompson) Heil. Survivors of the immediate family include her husband, Ernie Bydalek of Grand Island, NE One son & daughter-in-law, Jim & Deb Bydalek of Hastings, NE Three daughters & two sons-in-law, Chris & Doug Obermiller of Loup City, NE Deb & Ken Bonczynski of Kearney, NE Cindy McCarville of Marquette, NE and her special friend Dan Emery 10 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren Two sisters & a brother-in-law, Arlie & Richard Jasnoch of Grand Island, NE Norma Classen of Hastings, NE One sister-in-law, Carolyn Heil of Loup City, NE Leona grew up in Loup City, NE, graduating from Loup City High School in 1942. She completed her degree at Kearney State Teachers College. She began teaching at Dist. #6 in Sherman County, later teaching in rural Howard County. She married Ernest Ernie Bydalek on June 2, 1942, at Loup City, NE. They lived in Grand Island for several years before returning to Sherman County to farm. Mr. Bydalek retired in 1981 and the couple moved back to Grand Island. Leona enjoyed her family and loved spending time with her grandchildren & great grandchildren. She was an avid quilter, quilting quilts for each of her family members. She loved flower gardening, especially roses, she also enjoyed traveling and playing cards. She was a member of St. Marys Cathedral, the Cathedral Ladies, St. Marys Quilting Ladies, and Servants of the Fathers Love Community. Memorials may be given to support breast cancer as Leona was a cancer survivor. She was preceded in death by a brother, Loren Heil and brother-in-law Gerry Classen.
