Obituary

Lawrence J. "Larry" Leifeld, 90, of Grand Island, NE, died Wednesday, March 1, 2017, at CHI Health St. Francis Medical Center. Mass of Christian Burial will be Monday, March 6, 2017, at 1:00 p.m. at St. Mary's Cathedral. The Rev. Thomas A. Ryan and Rev. Mark A. Maresh will concelebrate. Burial will be in Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery. Military honors will be rendered by the United Veterans Honor Guard and the U.S. Air Force Honor Team. Visitation will be Sunday, March 5, 2017, from 4 – 7 p.m. at Curran Funeral Chapel with a vigil service at 7 p.m. Curran Funeral Chapel is assisting the family. Larry was born June 9, 1926, at Petersburg, Nebraska. The son of John and Mary (Reislman) Leifeld. His family includes daughters and sons-in-law, Joan and Bob Buffington of Centennial, CO Jannan and Bill McLellan of Grand Island, NE Jude and Bill Lammert of Grand Island, NE Brother, Jack Leifeld of Albion, NE Brother-in-law, Marvin Atteberry of Trainer, IA Grandchildren and their spouses, Amanda and Brandon Gunderson, Lacey Buffington, Krista and John Shaw, Shayla and Kyle Nabity, Angie and Brian Butler, Trina and Brendan Zahl, Jacob and Jamie Lammert, Levi Lammert . 18 great grandchildren. Larry grew up in Petersburg graduating from St. John's Catholic School in 1944. He attended University of Nebraska at Omaha before entering the U.S. Air Force. He was a B17 Gunner before his honorable discharge after two years of service. He returned to Petersburg where he worked at Leifeld Hardware for several years before working for Ray Knobe. He married Frances M. "Frankie" Wemhoff on August 17, 1948 at Humphrey, NE. They lived in Grand Island where Larry worked at the Ordinance Plant before working for Schuff's Appliance Center. Larry also worked for Lingerman Electric, and Swift & Company, retiring in 1970. In his retirement he worked at GICC, and the VA Medical Center until 1988. Mrs. Leifeld died October 18, 1999. Larry enjoyed water skiing and hunting in his younger day. He was an avid gardener sharing his produce with everyone. He loved to travel and was known for his generosity. He treasured his family and the time spent with them. He was a member of St. Mary's Cathedral, was an usher at the church for years, helped with counting the weekly collection, and was a member of the Knights of Columbus. He is preceded in death by his parents, wife, Frances, son Don Leifeld, grandson, Jason Lammert, sisters Marge Atteberry and Dorothy Leifeld.
