Josephine A. JoAnne Shafer, 79, of Grand Island, Nebraska, died Saturday, January 18, 2014, at St. Francis Medical Center. Mass of the Christian Burial will be Tuesday, January 21, 2014, at 10:30 a.m., at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church. The Rev. Todd K. Philipsen and Rev. Mark A. Maresh will concelebrate. JoAnne will bequeath her remains to the Anatomical Board of the State of Nebraska following services. Inurnment will be in Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery at a later date. Visitation will be Monday, January 20, 2014, from 4 7 p.m.at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church with a vigil service at 7:00 p.m. Curran Funeral Chapel is assisting the family.
JoAnne was born March 20, 1934, at Wood River, Nebraska, the daughter of Donald & Ann C. (Malone) Hindmarsh.

JoAnne grew up and received her education in Wood River graduating from Wood River High School in 1951. She attended Western Union Telegraph School and after receiving her certificate she was
employed as an automatic operator at Western Union in Rapid City, SD, San Diego, CA, Lincoln, NE, and Scottsbluff, NE. She married Joseph Spud Shafer on February 1, 1953, at Los Angeles, CA. Since 1982 she resided in Grand Island working as a Paralegal. At the time of her retirement in 2000 she was employed by Hall County Attorney in Child Support Enforcement.
JoAnne enjoyed the company of her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She loved sharing her faith with everyone she met and quietly ministering to those in need.
She was a member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church.
In lieu of flowers memorials are suggested to Blessed Sacrament Food Pantry or Spirit Radio.
JoAnne was preceded in death by one son, Donald Douglas Shafer in 1960, her parents, a brother, Jim Hindmarsh, a sister Mary Lou Russell, and a brother-in-law, Larry Bellamy.
