Joanne Murphy Purdy, 88, of Grand Island, NE, died Friday, September 22, 2017, at Ambassador Health, Lincoln, NE, surrounded by her loving family. Mass of Christian Burial will be Thursday, September 28, 2017, at 10:30 a.m. at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church. The Rev. Martin L. Egging and Rev. Thomas A. Ryan will concelebrate the funeral mass. Visitation will be Wednesday, September 27, 2017, from 5 to 7 p.m. at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church with a vigil service at 7 p.m. Interment will be Friday, September 29, 2017, in Calvary Cemetery, Sioux City, Iowa, with a committal service at 10:00 a.m. Fr. Donald Ries will officiate. Memorials are suggested to Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church. Curran Funeral Chapel is assisting the family. Joanne was born April 25, 1929, in Sioux City, Iowa. She was the daughter of Walter and Ruth (Corrigan) Hammerstrom. Survivors of the immediate family include her children: Mike Murphy of Lincoln, NE Jim and Gayle Murphy of Lincoln, NE Sheila and Tim Terrell of Lincoln, NE Bill Murphy of Grand Island, NE Tim and Mary Murphy of Lincoln, NE Mary Jo and Chris Derickson of North Platte, NE Step children: Lynn Purdy, Mark Purdy, Drew Purdy, Scott Purdy, Kirk Purdy, Lisa Prechel, Gary Purdy, John Purdy and Sara Oleson Siblings: Elaine Danner of Lincoln, NE Jack and Pat Hammerstrom of Sioux City, IA Peggy and Dave Lee of Palm City, FL Others left to cherish her memory include her 10 grandchildren, a great grandchild, and step grandchildren. Joanne grew up in Sioux City graduating from Cathedral High School in 1947. She continued her education at Briar Cliff College in Sioux City. She married William P. Murphy on September 2, 1950, in Sioux City. They lived in Sioux City and Omaha before moving to Grand Island in 1956. Joanne was a homemaker while her children were young. William Murphy died March 12, 1973. She married Richard Purdy on June 15, 1985, in Grand Island, NE. She worked as an office receptionist at Farmers Insurance Group and later at St. Mary's Cathedral office, retiring in the mid 90's after 20 years of service. Richard Purdy died February 1, 1996. Joanne loved the time she spent with her children and grandchildren. She enjoyed knitting, traveling, playing Bridge, and was an avid baker. She especially loved cooking for her family. She was a member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church. She was preceded in death by her parents; husbands, William Murphy and Richard Purdy; daughter-in-law, Karen Murphy and sister, Dorothy Dunlap.
