Obituary

Joan Mary Shamburg, 88, of, Grand Island, NE died Wednesday, June 8, 2022, at CHI Health St. Francis. Mass of Christian burial will be Wednesday, June 15, 2022, at 10:30 a.m. at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church. Rev. Martin L. Egging will be the celebrant. The funeral mass will be livestreamed on Curran Funeral Chapel's Facebook page. Burial will be in the Grand Island City Cemetery. Visitation will be Tuesday, June 14, 2022, from 4 – 6 p.m. at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church with a vigil service at 6 p.m. Mass offerings will be treasured by the family. You are encouraged to sign Joan's guestbook at www.curranfuneralchapel.com under her obituary. Curran Funeral Chapel is assisting the family. Joan was born December 7, 1933, in Humphrey, NE. She is the daughter of Joseph and Cecilia (Wieser) Fuchs. Joan grew up in Humphrey graduating from Humphrey St. Francis High School in 1951. Joan married her first husband Carol Pinger on May 22, 1956, in Humphrey, NE. They lived throughout Nebraska before settling in Grand Island in 1981. Three children were born of this union, Terry (Hazel) Pinger of Omaha, NE, Pam Scarrow of Grand Island, NE and Becky (Shane) Smith of Glenwood, Iowa. Joan married Gene Shamburg on December 1, 1989, in Grand Island, NE. They raced thoroughbred horses in Grand Island, Hot Springs, Arkansas and San Antonio, Texas. Gene died November 22, 2016. Joan returned to Grand Island at that time. Joan enjoyed horse racing, putting puzzles together, tending to her gardens, and especially loved time shared with her family. Joan is survived by her children Grandchildren, Mallory, Jeremy, Spencer, Nicole, Alyssa, Nathan, Joshua, and Mae Great grandchildren, Carson and Elena Sister, Marcella Pfeifer of Omaha, NE Sister-in-law, Bernie of Madison, NE Joan is preceded in death by her parents, husband, and siblings: Victor, James, Fr. Loren Fuchs, Leonard, Eileen, Viola, Cecilia, Clara, and Elizabeth.
