Obituary

Jayme (Jay, Jay Jay, Jaybird) Alan Maciejewski, 53, died Friday, August 11, 2017, following his personal battle with early-onset Alzheimer's disease. Visitation will be from 4 – 6 pm, Sunday, August 13, 2017, at Curran Funeral Chapel, with a 6 p.m. scripture rosary service. Mass of Christian burial will be Monday, August 14, 2017 at 10:30 am at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church. The Rev. Martin L. Egging and Rev. Mark A. Maresh will concelebrate the funeral mass. Burial will be at St. Francis Cemetery, Ashton, Nebraska with a 1:30 pm committal service. Jay was born on July 9, 1964 in Loup City, Nebraska, to Francis and Gladys (Dzingle) Maciejewski. He is survived by his parents of Grand Island, NE Siblings, Mark (Beth) Maciejewski of Concordia KS, Pam (Kirk) Benner of Lincoln, NE David (Stephanie) Maciejewski of Omaha, NE Paul Maciejewski of Grand Island, NE Seven nieces and nephews, and 2 grand nieces. He was preceded in death by his grandparents Louis and Mary Maciejewski, and Gilbert and Irene Dzingle. Jay moved to Grand Island with his family in 1965, and graduated from Grand Island Senior High School in 1985. He was employed with St. Francis Medical Center and the Grand Generation Center. Jaybird loved music and dancing, fine and not-so-fine dining, and most importantly, his family and friends. He was especially fond of his nieces and nephews, Adam (Tiera) Maciejewski, Matt and Drew Benner, Lauren and Sara Maciejewski, Abbi and Logan Maciejewski , Jaiden Russaw and Lennox Maciejewski, and goddaughter, Madeline Roberts. Jay had a happy smile and warm heart, and made friends wherever he went. He participated in Special Olympics swimming, diving, and track events. He was a volunteer at Grand Island Central Catholic, and selected as Volunteer of the Year in 1992. He was a member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church and Knights of Columbus. Jay made a difference in the lives of those who knew him, and he will be greatly missed. Memorials are suggested to Grand Island Central Catholic High School.
