Jay R. Garroutte, 53, of West Des Moines, IA, died unexpectedly, Friday, July 5, 2013, at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines, IA. Mr. Garroutte was cremated. The family will celebrate his life on Wednesday, July 10, 2013, from 5 7 p.m. at Curran Funeral Chapel. Curran Funeral Chapel is assisting the family.
Jay was born May 22, 1960, at Grand Island, Nebraska. He was the son of John L. and Jerenne (Dubbs) Garroutte.

One brother, Randy Garroutte of Denver, CO
One sister, Stacy Garroutte of Grand Island, NE
A special friend Brenda Etrheim of Des Moines, IA
Others left to cherish his memory include two nieces, Erica and Hannah Garroutte, and several aunts and uncles.
Jay graduated from Grand Island Sr. High School in 1978. He entered the U.S. Army on August 24, 1979, serving in Germany as a military police officer. Following his honorable discharge on August 23, 1982, Jay was employed with the Hall County Sheriff Department as a Deputy Sheriff, night road patrol; while also attended Kearney State College during the day. Following his graduation from Kearney State, he was accepted into UNLs Law School, where he graduated with honors. He practiced with the Truell Law Firm in Grand Island before moving to Des Moines where he was employed as an investigator for the Public Defenders Office. At the time of his death he was a free lance attorney.
Jay was an avid fisherman who loved fishing, traveling the states for that prize catch.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents.
