Obituary

Janet Olga Marlene (Hovland) Benson, 84 of Grand Island died peacefully Tuesday, March 1, 2022 at Heritage at Sagewood surrounded by her seven children. Funeral service will be held at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Grand Island, Nebraska at 11:00 am on Monday, March 7th, officiated by Pastor Bill Pavuk. Burial to follow at the Grand Island City Cemetery. Visitation will take place from 5:00 pm - 7:00 pm on Sunday, March 6th at Curran Funeral Chapel. Curran Funeral Chapel is assisting the family. Janet Hovland was born in Flandreau, South Dakota on March 2, 1937 to Edward and Nancy (Sellevold) Hovland. Janet graduated from Flandreau High School. After graduation, Janet married Eldon Benson and worked at Moody County Courthouse. Over the years, in addition to raising seven children, Janet worked at Lutheran Hospital, Overland National Bank, family-owned Bridal World (treating every bride like a daughter of her own), Grand Island Senior High School and Allen Capital Group. She supported her husband Eldon's various business ventures as well, serving as co-owner of Bel-Wood Buildings. Janet was a dedicated Sunday School teacher for over 50 years and taught piano lessons for two decades. Over the years, you could find her playing a round of golf before she sent the kids off to school, running (she ran her first 5k at 50 years old), playing piano and enjoying bridge club with her closest friends for over 30 years. She was a dedicated supporter of her children and grandchildren's various activities including sporting events, church activities, musicals, 4-H shows, thoroughbred racing, dance recitals, graduations, academic accomplishments and so much more. As lifetime Islanders, Janet and Eldon had 18 family members graduate from Grand Island Senior High School and have had a member of the family either attending, working, coaching or teaching there for over 56 consecutive years and counting. Janet is survived by seven children: Jeffrey Benson of Grand Island, Cheri Brown of Omaha, Kimberly Wagner (Monty Crandon) of Tucson, twin daughters Kathi Beebe of Scottsdale and Kelli (Jim) Jeffries of Grand Island, and her second set of twins James (Jen) Benson of Lincoln and Julie (Roy) Wooden of Grand Island. Grandchildren: Joel Pane, Brittany and Cale Benson, Rocky (Tiffany) and Cooper Brown, Nicolette and Ashley Wagner, Logan and Colton Beebe, Johnna (Shea) Austin, Jack and Jay Jeffries, Emma Benson and Reagan, Carter and Harrison Wooden. Great-Grandchildren: Enzo and Zoë Benson, Reese, twins Brigham and Brighton, Lainey, Bostyn, and Blair Brown, Andi and Harley Austin. Also survived by her loving brother Eugene Hovland of Rapid City, SD, sister Norma Bancroft of Norfolk, NE, brother-in-law LeRoy Benson of Sioux Falls, SD and numerous nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by husband Eldon Benson, parents Edward and Nancy Hovland, father-in-law and mother-in-law, James and Cora Benson, and sister-in-law Donna Benson. Loved by many, Janet was a longtime member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church. Memorials and donations suggested for the Grand Island Education Foundation or St. Paul's Lutheran Church Memorial Fund.
