Obituary
James W. Bennett, 85, of Greeley, NE, formerly of Grand Island, NE, died Sunday, March 19, 2017, at CHI Health St. Francis Medical Center. Mass of Christian Burial will be Wednesday, March 22, 2017, at 10:30 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Greeley, NE. The Rev. Antony Thekkekara will be the celebrant. Burial will be in St. Michael's Catholic Cemetery in Albion, NE, with a 1:30 committal service. Military honors will be rendered by the Albion American Legion Post #162, VFW Post #736 Honor Guard and the U.S. Navy Honor Team. Visitation will be Tuesday, March 21, 2017 from 5 - 7 p.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church with a vigil service at 7:00 p.m. Curran Funeral Chapel is assisting the family.
James was born February 27, 1932, in rural Cedar Rapids, NE. He was the son of William and Viola (Nichols) Bennett.
Survivors of his immediate family include several nieces, nephews and cousins.
James grew up in Cedar Rapids, NE receiving his education at Dist. 72. After his schooling he farmed with his grandparents and parents. He entered the U.S. Navy on March 23, 1953 serving until his honorable discharge on May 21, 1957. He returned to Albion where he worked construction until moving to Grand Island. He was employed with Diamond Engineering until his retirement. After retirement he worked part time at Tilley Sprinklers Systems.
James was an avid reader, was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, and the Albion American Legion Post #162.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, William and LaVerne, sister, Lavonn Straub and his aunt, Nellie Mueller.
Memorials are suggested to Sacred Heart Catholic Church or the Greeley Care Home.
