Obituary

Harold W. Korgel, 85, of Grand Island, NE, died Saturday, February 17, 2018, at his home. Mass of Christian Burial will be Friday, February, 23, 2018 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Leo's Catholic Church. Rev. Donald A. Buhrman will celebrate the funeral mass. The casket will be closed for Friday's services. Burial will be in the Grand Island City Cemetery. Visitation with an open casket, will be Thursday, February 22, 2018 from 4:00-7:00 p.m. at Curran Funeral Chapel with a vigil service at 7:00 p.m. Curran Funeral Chapel is assisting the family. Harold was born on January 8, 1933 in Minot, North Dakota to Walter and Margaret (Hennes) Korgel. He attended a country school, McKinley District No. 36 in Ward County, near the family farm. Harold was united in marriage to Vivian B. Edwardson on September 26, 1955 at St. Leo's Catholic Church in Minot. The couple lived in Minot where Harold co-owned an auto mechanics shop (Filler Garage) and worked on the family farm. He later owned and operated Harold's Enco gas station. He then worked for Truck and Equipment/Ditch Witch. In 1964, he transferred to Grand Island where he worked for Ditch Witch of Nebraska. He later started his own trenching business, Harold's Trenching Service. After selling the business, he worked as a custodian for the Grand Island Public Schools at Barr Junior High for 17 years before retiring in 1998. He then worked part-time on the mowing crew for the Grand Island City Parks and Recreation Department. Throughout his life, Harold enjoyed the outdoors, fishing and camping. Survivors of Harold ("Pa"), as he was a affectionately referred to by his family, include his wife, Vivian, of Grand Island; six children and spouses, Dennis and Marilyn Korgel of G.I., Denise and Gerry Hanson of Lincoln, Deanne Splattstoesser and Newell Decker of Lincoln, Dean and Melody Korgel of Grand Island, Doreen & Brian Grupe of Grand Island, and David and Tricia Korgel of Columbus; 10 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren; a sister, Audrey Elsberry of Brooklyn Park, Minnesota; and one brother, Dan and Donna Korgel of Minot, ND. Harold was preceded in death by his parents; a sister and brother-in-law, Kathryn and Jim Schloer; and brother-in-law, Bob Elsberry.
