Obituary

Harlan R. Puncochar, 87, of Grand Island, NE, died at his home Wednesday, February 3, 2021. Mass of Christian burial will be Monday, February, 8, 2021, at 10:30 a.m. at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church. The Rev. Martin L. Egging will be the celebrant. Interment will be in Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery. Military honors will be rendered by the United Veterans Honor Guard and the U.S. Navy Honor Team. Visitation will be Sunday, February 7, 2021, from 4 – 6 p.m. at the church with a vigil service at 6 p.m. The funeral mass will be livestreamed on Curran Funeral Chapel Facebook page. CDC requirements will be followed and face masks are required at both the visitation and funeral mass. In lieu of flowers memorials are suggested to the family for designation at a later date. Harlan was born March 16, 1933, in Burwell, NE. to George and Anna (Petska) Puncochar. He grew up in Loup City, graduating from high school in 1951. He entered the Navy on April 13, 1953 serving on the U.S.S. Prairie AD-15. Harlan called it "the floating city", her task was to service Destroyers in or near battle areas keeping them fit for duty. He often talked of sailing the world not once but twice while in the Navy. He also reminisced how he sailed through a hurricane and lived to talk about it. He was honorably discharged on April 12, 1957. Harlan returned to Grand Island working at Roberts Dairy until beginning his schooling at Southeast Community College-Milford Campus, completing his degree in Tool and Die Engineering after two years. His class project was to construct his own hunting rifle, which he still had to this day. Harlan worked at Holiday Manufacturing before beginning his career with Sperry New Holland. He married Anne Neville on May 11, 1963, in York, NE. The couple lived in Grand Island where they raised their four children. Harlan farmed and raised cattle throughout his life and shared that passion with his children by being the Dairy Producers 4-H leader. He moonlighted as a consultant at T & L Irrigation for several years. Harlan retired from New Holland in 1995. Harlan enjoyed camping and traveling with his family, especially attending his annual Navy reunions all across the United States. He was an accomplished cook and loved cooking for family gatherings. His favorite pastime was being Dad, Grandpa, and Great Grandpa. He loved attending his children and grandchildren's sporting and school activities. He was their number one fan! He was an active member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, serving as a Eucharistic Minister. He also served as a consultant at SEC/Milford. Harlan is survived by his wife of 57 years, Anne Puncochar of Grand Island, NE Children and their spouses, Mary Budde of Grand Island, NE Mike (Libbie) Puncochar of Grand Island, NE Barbara (Paul) Olsufka of Marquette, NE Tim (Teri) Puncochar of Grand Island, NE Others left to cherish his memory include his 20 grandchildren and five great grandchildren.
