Gerald J. "Jerry" Smith, 88, of St. Paul, NE, formerly of Greeley, NE died Sunday, March 10, 2024, at Brookefield Park in St. Paul. Mass of Christian burial will be Wednesday, March 20, 2024, at 10:30 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Greeley, NE. The Rev. Lawrence Vadakkan will be the celebrant assisted by Deacon Paul Nordhues. Interment will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery in Greeley, NE. Visitation will be Tuesday, March 19, 2024, from 5 – 7 p.m. with a vigil service at 7 p.m. led by Deacon Ron Glaser. Memorials are suggested to Sacred Heart Catholic Church. He was the son of Mark T. and Elizabeth (Barry) Smith. Jerry grew up in Greeley graduating from Sacred Heart School in 1954. He married Agnes G. "Aggie" McDonald on April 14 1956 in Spalding, NE. They lived and farmed south of Greeley. In 1961 the couple moved to Brayton, NE where they farmed, raised dairy cows, and cattle, until moving to Greeley in 2010. Aggie died June 11, 2020. Jerry lived in the Greeley Care Home until moving to Brookfield Park in 2021. Jerry was active in 4-H and was a member of the Brayton School Board. He was a member of the Wolbach Rodeo Club and Greeley Rodeo Club, helping with their annual rodeo. He volunteered at the Greeley Irish Festival also. Jerry was a cowboy at heart, he loved the days spent on his horse checking his cattle. Jerry was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus. He is survived by his children, Jerry Pat (Sherry) Smith of Spalding, NE John (Karen) Smith of Broken Bow, NE Eileen (Gene) Hubl of Lawrence, NE Dann (Stacy) Smith of Columbus, NE Sheila (John) Sweenie of Brush, CO Sister, Betty Costello of Grand Island, NE Others left to cherish his memory include his 15 grandchildren and 29 great grandchildren. Jerry is preceded in death by his parents, wife, Aggie Smith, brothers, Lawrence, Jack, and Billy, sisters, Catherine Smith, Rosie Dugan, and Dorothy Zeleski.
