Obituary

Frederick L. Fred Kinghorn, 84, of Grand Island, NE, formerly of Morrill, NE, died peacefully July 7, 2014, at Golden Living Center, Park Place. Mr. Kinghorn's wishes were to be cremated. A rosary service will be Monday, July 14, 2014, at 10:00 a.m. at Resurrection Catholic Church followed by a memorial mass at 11:00 a.m. Father Michael F. McDermott will be the celebrant. Inurnment will be Tuesday, July 15, 2014, at 3:00 p.m. (Mountain Time) at Sunset Memorial Park Cemetery in Scottsbluff, NE. There will be a time of fellowship at the parish hall of St. Theresas Catholic Church in Mitchell, NE following the burial. Curran Funeral Chapel is assisting the family. Fred was born January 11, 1930 to James and Sarah (McCoy) Kinghorn of Crab Orchard, Nebraska. His mother died when Fred was eight years old and his father remarried Laura Bockelman Kilpatrick in 1941. He graduated as Salutatorian from Lewiston High School in 1947. Fred attended college at Nebraska Wesleyan University and the University of Nebraska where he studied agriculture and was a member of Alpha Gamma Rho fraternity. While attending UNL, he met Patricia( Pat) Hanlon of Morrill. Fred and Pat were married on May 24, 1951 in Mitchell. Fred farmed in the Dutch Flats community north of Morrill from 1951-2008, when he moved to Grand Island. He raised sugar beets, dry pinto and great northern beans, corn, and alfalfa. He fed lambs and started a SPF hog farrowing operation. Fred served on the school board of Fairview 34 school for 15 years. He also served on the Natural Resource Board and Pathfinder Irrigation District Board. Fred was very active in his church, serving on the building committee of St. Theresa's Church in Mitchell and as a trustee of St. Ann's Church in Morrill. He was a lifelong member of the Knights of Columbus. In addition to his wife, Fred is survived by six children; Rodney (Joan) Kinghorn of Fenton, MI; Ann (Rod) Frack of Minneapolis, KS; Jane (Bill) Brown of Grand Island; Bryan (Michele) Kinghorn of Omaha; MK (Chris) Garrett of Lincoln; Karen (Matt) Mankhey of Lincoln. He also leaves behind thirteen grandchildren, seven great grandchildren. Sister, Katherine Smidt of Shenandoah, IA Brother, Jim Kinghorn of Lewiston. Other survivors include a sister-in-law, JoAnne Begley of Morrill, NE Brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Jack and Colleen Hanlon of Los Alamos, NM and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister and her husband, Shirley and Bob Lineweber; his brother-in laws, Leon Smidt and Richard Begley and Pat's loving parents, Cletus and Lena Hanlon. He was a kind, faith-filled, loving husband, father, and grandfather that will be dearly missed. Memorials are suggested to St. Ann's Catholic Church in Morrill, Resurrection Catholic Church in Grand Island or the Farm and Ranch Museum in Gering.
