Frank A. Smollen, 96, of Grand Island, NE, died Saturday, May 14, 2022, at Azria Health Broadwell. Mass of Christian burial will be Thursday, May 19, 2022, at 10:30 a.m. at Resurrection Catholic Church. The Rev. Thomas Vijumon will be the celebrant. Interment will be in the Grand Island City Cemetery. Visitation will be Wednesday, May 18, 2022, from 4 – 6 p.m. at Resurrection Catholic Church with a vigil service at 6 p.m. Memorials are suggested to the family for designation at a later date. The son of Jan A. and Tekla "Tillie" (Furmanski) Smolen. He grew up in and attended school in the Cedar Rapids area. After his schooling Frank farmed in the Cedar Rapids and Greeley area. He was united in marriage to Alice P. Nealon on February 9, 1957, in Aurora, NE. The couple lived in Cedar Rapids where Frank and his brother owned and operated Smollen Trucking. The family moved to Grand Island where Frank worked as a welding fabrication supervisor for Ward Manufacturing, the Ordinance Plant, and Kelly Well, before retiring from Monfort in 1987. After his retirement Frank mowed and maintained the lawn at George Park. Alice died in July 2015. Frank enjoyed woodworking, gardening, and feeding the squirrels. He was an active member of Resurrection Catholic Church, where he cared for and maintained the church grounds for years. Frank is survived by his sons and daughter-in-law, Francis Smollen of Grand Island, NE Bob Smollen of Grand Island, NE Dennis (Kris) Smollen of Grand Island, NE Daughters and son-in-law, Trish (Cory) Greenwood of Omaha, NE Bernice Gosda Brother and sister-in-law, Al (Maureen) Smollen of Grand Island, NE Others left to cherish his memory include his grandchildren, Dawn (Nate Moseman) Wentling, Adam (Tiffanie) Greenwood, Sarah (Danny) Burns, Jake (Elizabeth) Gosda, Alec Smollen, Emily Smollen and great grandchildren, Payton Frazier and Edie Greenwood. Frank is preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Alice, a son John Francis Smollen, two brothers, and four sisters.
