Obituary

Evelyn D. Panowicz, 89, of rural Grand Island, NE, died Monday, October 2, 2017, at Good Samaritan Society-Wood River, with family by her side. Mass of Christian burial will be Friday October 6, 2017, at 10:30 a.m. at Resurrection Catholic Church. The Rev. Joseph Kadaprayil and Rev. James C. Schmitt will concelebrate the funeral mass assisted by Deacon John Willmes. Burial will be in Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be Thursday, October 5, 2017, from 4 – 7 p.m. at Resurrection Catholic Church with a rosary at 6:00 p.m. Curran Funeral Chapel is assisting the family. Evelyn was born July 24, 1928, at Wood River, Nebraska. She was the daughter of Otto and Marie (Eich) Harders. Survivors of her immediate family include her husband of 66 years, Al Panowicz of rural Grand Island, NE Sons and daughters-in-law, Mike and Patti Panowicz of Cairo, NE Jerry and Beth Panowicz of Overland Park, KS Randy and Tammy Panowicz of Grand Island, NE Daughters and son-in-law, Leanne and Rick Ely of Richmond, VA Sherry Panowicz of Grand Island, NE Brother and sisters-in-law, France and Charlotte Harders of Grand Island, NE Ruby Harders of Wood River, NE Elaine Panowicz of Grand Island, NE Sisters and brothers-in-law, Joyce and Tom Rainforth of Grand Island, NE Peggy and Bill Thomas of Wood River, NE Glenda and Arch Stittsworth of Grand Island, NE Others left to cherish her memory include her grandchildren and their spouses, Bob Panowicz, John and Sarita Panowicz, Matt and Sarah Panowicz, John and Paola Ely, David and Lauren Ely, Hannah Ely and fiancé Joey Purvis, Colin Panowicz, Shayla Panowicz, Evan Panowicz and Emily Panowicz, three great grandchildren, Rylan, Annabelle, and Emma Panowicz. Evelyn grew up in Wood River, graduating from Wood River High School in 1947. She married Aloysius R. "Al" Panowicz, on August 29, 1951, at Grand Island, NE. The couple settled and farmed east of Cairo, NE. Evelyn helped on the farm while nurturing her children. She raised chickens and was an avid gardener, canning much of what she grew. She enjoyed cultivating her flower garden and relished the results of her hard work. She was employed at Jack Bailey Studio. She was an exceptional seamstress, crafting bridesmaid dresses, outfits of all kinds, and alterations when called upon. Evelyn spent many hours in the kitchen cooking and baking. She especially loved preparing meals, breads, and desserts, for family and friends. Family meant the world to Evelyn, she loved time spent with her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. She was a member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church and was a charter member of Resurrection Catholic Church. She was active in the Altar Society, spearheading the annual soup supper. She is welcomed into heaven by her parents, a daughter Patty Panowicz, brothers and sisters-in-law, Arnold and Glorene Harders, Delbert Harders, Leona Albright, sister and brothers-in-law, Leona and Jim Rauert, Dan Beck, and Dan Panowicz.
