Eugene C. "Gene" Beck, 85, of Central City, NE, formerly of Scotia, NE, died Sunday, May 20, 2018, at Central City Care Center. Services will be Thursday, May 24, 2018, at 11:00 a.m. at Curran Funeral Chapel. Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. until service time. A lunch will follow the funeral service, in the community room of Curran Funeral Chapel. Burial will be in Mt. Hope Cemetery, Scotia, NE, with a 2:00 p.m. committal service. Military honors will be rendered by Ruben Beck American Legion Post #150 and Offutt Air Force Base Honor Team. Curran Funeral Chapel is assisting the family.
Gene was born August 3, 1932, at Scotia, Nebraska. The son of Harry A. and Ruth L. (Stubblefield) Beck.
Survivors of his immediate family include his wife of 27 years, Virginia L. Beck, of Grand Island, NE
Sons: Donald (Connie) Beck of Los Lunas, NM
Richard Beck of Grand Island, NE
Daughters: Janet Beck of Hastings, NE
Michelle Sheets of Grand Island, NE
Brother: Ernest Beck of Milbank, SD
Others left to cherish his memory include his nine grandchildren, five great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren.
Gene grew up in Scotia, NE, graduating from Scotia High School in 1951. After graduation he entered the United States Air Force in 1951 serving four years in active duty and four years in the Air Force Reserves. He was stationed in Korea for one year during that time. He was honorably discharged in 1959. He spent the next 25 years working in the retail business in Wyoming, Colorado, New Mexico, and Nebraska. In 1983 he moved back to Scotia to the farm he grew up on. He drove the school bus for many years and helped coach American Legion Baseball. He built Becks Greenhouse and operated it until retiring in 2000. He married Virginia L. Varley on September 4, 1990, at Loup City, NE. They lived in Scotia, NE until moving to Grand Island, NE in 2017.
Gene enjoyed bowling, fishing, and helping others.
Gene was a past member and past president of the New Mexico Lions Club and was a past commander of Ruben Beck Post #150 American Legion in Scotia, NE.
Gene is preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Donald, Darrel, and Bernard Beck and a grandson, Joshua Beck.
Memorials are suggested to the American Cancer Society or the Alzheimer's Association.
