Obituary

Esther M. Feik, 90, of Grand Island, Nebraska, died Sunday, January 5, 2014, at Good Samaritan Society, Wood River, NE, with her family by her side. A memorial mass will be Thursday, January 9, 2014, at 10:00 a.m. at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church. Fr. Thomas A. Ryan and Fr. Harold R. Kurtenbach will concelebrate. Burial will be in the Grand Island City Cemetery. The family will receive friends Wednesday, January 8, 2014, from 5 7 p.m. at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church with a vigil service at 7:00 p.m. Curran Funeral Chapel is assisting the family. Esther was born January 17, 1923, at Fullerton, NE; she was the daughter of John & Dora (Cuba) Tarnick. Her family includes one daughter & two sons-in-law, Carole & David Chmelka of Grand Island, NE Mark Fiedler of North Platte, NE One son, Tom Feik of Grand Island, NE Two sisters, Stella Balasa of Fullerton, NE Mary Anne Huebner of Grand Island, NE Eight grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. Esther grew up and attended high school in Fullerton, NE. She moved to Grand Island and married Lee A. Feik on August 16, 1947. They lived in Grand Island until 1972 when Mr. Feik was transferred by the Union Pacific Rail Road to North Platte, NE. They moved back to Grand Island after Mr. Feik retired in 1987. Mr. Feik died on May 8, 1993 and her daughter Dottie Fiedler died September 13, 2001. Esther moved to Chrysalis Lutheran Homes in 1993 after the death of her husband Lee. She loved her time there, the friendships she formed with all the other residents and the activities they shared. She enjoyed her weekly visits to the Platt-Duetsche for hamburger night. She was an excellent cook and especially enjoyed baking bread and rolls. She loved the time spent with her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was a prayerful woman, remembering the intentions of many in her daily prayer routine. She was a member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church and the Platt-Duetsche. Memorials are suggested to Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church or Grand Island Central Catholic Foundation. Esther is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Lee Feik, one daughter Dottie Fiedler, one sister and three brothers-in-law, Katherine & Keith Schuyler, Ed Balasa, Rod Huebner and a nephew John Huebner and other nieces and nephews.
