Edward M. "Ed" Ryan, 77, of Grand Island, died Monday, September 10, 2018, at CHI Health St. Francis Medical Center in Grand Island, NE. To respect Ed's wishes, cremation will occur. Mass of Christian Burial will be Friday, September 14, 2018, at 10:30 a.m. at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church. The Rev. Martin L. Egging and Rev. Thomas A. Ryan will concelebrate the funeral mass with other priests of the Diocese of Grand Island. Inurnment will be in the Kearney City Cemetery with a 2:00 p.m. committal service. The family will greet friends Thursday, September 13, 2018, from 4 – 7 p.m. at Curran Funeral Chapel with a vigil service at 7 p.m. Curran Funeral Chapel is caring for the family.
Ed was born November 25, 1940, at Kearney, NE. He was the son of Gerald M. "Jack" and Bernice (Dolan) Ryan.
Survivors of his immediate family include his brother, Fr. Thomas A. Ryan of Grand Island, NE.
Ed's companion, Lee Wilson of Kearney, NE.
Others left to cherish his memory include his many favorite cousins.
Ed grew up in Kearney where he was active in the Cub Scouts program. He graduated from Longfellow High School in 1959. Ed continued his education at Kearney Teachers College where he received his Teaching Degree in 1963. He taught at Stamford, NE for two years before beginning his career in 1965 at Centura High School, Cairo, NE. While at Centura he taught Accounting and Typing. He established and coached the Centura Girls Basketball program and coached volleyball as well. He helped run the concession stands at school activities, continuing to coordinate and purchase supplies for the stands for several years after his retirement. While teaching and coaching, Ed also was a caregiver for both of his parents, Jack and Bernice. Ed would teach classes, coach, and return to Kearney after practice or games, where he would close his parent's café, Camels Café and start all over the next day with energy to spare. Ed retired from Centura in 1997 after 32 years of service.
Ed invested in rental properties, he considered himself a handyman making repairs on his properties by himself when needed. His passion was teaching and he loved to mentor his students and reveled in their company and accomplishments.
He was an active member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, American Legion Post #53, and a past member of the Eagles Club.

Ed was preceded in death by his parents, Jack and Bernice Ryan.
