Obituary

Dorothy Ann Smith, 91, of Grand Island, died on Friday, April 2, 2021, at Lebensraum Assisted Living. Mass of Christian burial will be on Wednesday, April 7, 2021 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Leo's Catholic Church. The Rev. Donald A. Buhrman will be the celebrant. There will be no visitation. Inurnment will be in the Grand Island City Cemetery following the service. The funeral mass will be livestreamed on the St. Leo's Catholic Church Facebook page. Dorothy was born on March 19, 1930 to Robert and Gertrude (Gappa) Lewandowski. She was born and received her early education in Loup City and completed her education at St. Mary's Catholic School in Grand Island, class of 1949. She married Rolland Smith on January 19, 1949 at Rapid City, South Dakota. They made their home and raised their family in Grand Island. Dorothy worked at Delicious Foods for many years and later at Burger King as a dining room hostess. She was a member of St. Leo's Catholic Church. Those left to cherish her memories include her daughters and sons-in-law, Kathleen and Michael Schlachter of Grand Island and Pamela and Kenneth Schultz of Port Charlotte, Florida; her grandchildren, Timothy (Lisa) Bartz of Grand Island, Robert (Michelle) Bartz of Omaha, Michael (Anabel) Dunning of Buena Park, California, and Steven (Shawn) Dunning of Lakeland, Florida; step-grandchildren, Brian (Kim) Schlachter, Andrew (Alethia) Schlachter, and Heidi McIntee; 12 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson. She is also survived by her brother, Ronald Lewandowski of Grand Island, and her sister, Mary Ries of Hastings. Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband, Rolland (Smitty), her parents, her sister, Jeannie Woestman, a son-in-law, David Dunning, step-grandson, Darin Schultz, and her good friend, Janine (Jacky) Bayles. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital.
