Obituary

Donna F. Broeker Sydow Fredrick, 93, of Grand Island, NE, died Wednesday, July 28,2021, at her home with family at her side. Mass of Christian burial will be Monday, August 2, 2021, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Leo's Catholic Church. The Rev. Donald A. Buhrman will be the celebrant. Interment will be in the Grand Island City Cemetery. Visitation will be Sunday, August 1, 2021, from 4 to 6 p.m. at Curran Funeral Chapel with a vigil at 6:00 p.m. Memorials are suggested to St. Leo's Catholic Church or the Central Nebraska Humane Society. Donna was born on a farm near Carroll, Nebraska, on August 3, 1927 to Paul & Mary (Wurdinger) Broeker. Survivors of the immediate family include children, Paulette & Stephen Murillo of Castro Valley, CA Dr. Carol Meyer and Dallas Wilhelm of Hastings, NE Alan Sydow of Grand Island, NE Coral Garcia of Sacramento, CA Craig and Rhonda Sydow of Siloam Springs, Arkansas Sister-in-law, Logene (Sydow) Wickwire of Rock Island, IL Sister-in-law, Donna J. Fredrick of Loup City, NE Additional survivors include four grandchildren, one great grandchild, six nieces and nephews. Donna graduated from Carroll High School in 1944, and in 1947 received a Bachelor of Arts Degree from Wayne State College, Wayne, Nebraska with majors in mathematics, business and education. Upon graduation, she wed classmate Murle Sydow. Graduate studies were at Northern University, Greeley, Colorado and University of Nebraska at Kearney. For 21 years she taught business subjects in high schools in Nebraska, Colorado, & Iowa. She then taught 20 years at the Grand Island School of Business. In 1990 Donna retired after 13 years with Northwest High School in Grand Island. In 1960 Donna became active in Democrat politics. For many years she was the party's Hall County treasurer and for four years county chair. She served on the Nebraska State Democrat Central Committee for 30 years. Donna was Hall County Chair of Robert Kennedy's presidential campaign which included his and Ethyl's train ride across Nebraska. She met all Democratic presidential candidates from 1960 – 2000. Donna was an active member of American Association of University Women (AAUW), League of Women Voters, AARP, Parents Without Partners, and an active member and advisor of Professional Secretaries International. She served a term as president of Northwest High School Teachers Association and was a Life Member of both the Nebraska State Education Association and the National Education Association. Other memberships include Platt-Duetsche, Liederkranz, YWCA, YMCA, and VFW Auxiliary. For many years she chaired the YWCA's monthly card group, organizing for pitch, pinochle, and bridge. In 2009 Donna was selected to be the first recipient of the YWCA's award for Volunteer of the Year. She was a charter (1973) member of St. Leo's Catholic Church and was a very involved with its Ladies Organizations. Her hobbies included gardening, landscaping, crossword puzzles, and various card games, water exercises, yoga, walking, dancing, and canning fruit from her trees. She enjoyed camping and traveling with trips to Europe, Canada and most of the states. Donna married Clem Fredrick on June 13, 1987, at St. Leo's Catholic Church in Grand Island, NE. They zestily shared busy years of retirement. Mr. Fredrick died in 2003. Donna was preceded in death by her parents and two husbands, son-in-law Phil Garcia, brother-in-law Robert Wickwire, and sister and brother-in-law, Marlene and Emil Hoffman.
