Obituary

Donald Murry Wagner, 82, of Kansas City, MO, formerly of Grand Island, NE, died Thursday, June 24, 2010, at his home. Services will be Tuesday, June 29, 2010, at 10:00 a.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church, with a family prayer service at 9:45 a.m. The Rev. Jack Gillam will officiate. Burial will be in the Bloomfield City Cemetery with a 3:30 p.m. committal service. Military rites will be provided by the Bloomfield V.F.W. Post #4996 & the U.S. Marine Corp Honor Team. Visitation will be Monday, from 5 8 p.m. at Curran Funeral Chapel. More details will appear later. Donald Murry Wagner was born June 15, 1928 in rural Oakdale, Nebraska to Clarence Arthur and Stella (Henderson) Wagner. Survivors of his immediate family include his wife of 59 years, Joyce Wagner of Kansas City, MO One daughter and son-in-law, Roxanne and Bill Popa of Kansas City, MO Two sons and two daughters-in law, Dean and Sara Wagner of Bellevue, WA Chris and Mayumi Wagner of Overland Park, KS One Sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Clairce & Marlin Gansebom of Osmond,NE Eight grandchildren: Kyle (Kristin) Popa, Sarah, Adrian, Alexis, and Ryan Popa; Josh (Kate) Wagner; and Simon and Erika Wagner. He attended Oakdale Schools and graduated from high school in 1945. He served two years in the U.S.M.C. stationed at El Toro, California. After discharge, he completed the requirements to obtain his license as a funeral director and embalmer. He graduated from California College of Mortuary Sciences at Los Angeles in 1950. He was married to Joyce Frevert on August 26, 1951 at Golgatha Lutheran Church, rural Wausa, Nebraska. They lived in Omaha and York, Nebraska where he was engaged in the funeral profession. Murry and Joyce moved to Bloomfield, Nebraska in 1953 where they owned and operated Wagners Clothes Shop for 27 years. Here their three children, Roxanne, Dean, and Chris grew up and graduated from high school. While living in Bloomfield, he was a member of First Trinity Lutheran Church. He was a member of the church council, Bloomfield Chamber of Commerce, Boy Scouts of America Council, Bloomfield School Board, and served on planning committees for building the Good Samaritan Rest Home and the Rolling Hills Golf Course. In 1981 Murry and Joyce moved to Grand Island, Nebraska where he was employed by Apfel- Butler- Geddes Funeral Home. After retirement he was an Insurance Test Administrator for Insurance Testing of St. Paul, Minnesota. He also worked at various local funeral homes. While in Grand Island, he was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Lutheran Laymens League, Lions Club, and the American Legion. He was a member of the Nebraska Funeral Directors Association for over 50 years. In 2010 Murry and Joyce moved to Kansas City, Missouri to be closer to family. His hobbies included woodworking, golfing, reading, and playing bridge. He was preceded in death by his parents. The family suggests memorials be given to Trinity Lutheran Church, The Lutheran Hour, or the American Heart Association.
