Donald L. Nelson, 59, of Grand Island, NE, died at his home in Grand Island. Mr. Nelson was cremated. A memorial service and inurnment in Garner Township Cemetery, in Council Bluff, IA, will be held at a later date. Curran Funeral Chapel is assisting the family. Don was born May 7, 1957, at Marshalltown, Iowa. He was the son of Leo D. and Geneva May (Fourn) Nelson. Survivors of the immediate family include his son and daughter-in-law, Shane and Valire Nelson of Iowa City, IA Daughter and son-in-law, Keea and Justin Bywater of Harlan, IA Brothers and sister-in-law, Eldon Nelson of Omaha, NE Vaughn Nelson of Lincoln, NE Arnold and Jackie Nelson of Crete, NE Sister, Carla Nelson of York, NE Others left to cherish his memory include his grandchildren, Lucaas, Kyle, Ryan, Brooklyn, Jaidyn, Alana, and Serenity. Don grew up in Council Bluffs, IA, graduating from Thomas Jefferson High School. He married Willa Maylor on April 4, 1975 at Carter Lake Iowa. He entered the Marine Corp serving for four year after which time he served in the Army until his honorable discharge. He returned to Council Bluffs later moving to York where he lived until 2016 when he moved to Grand Island. He was an avid collector of mini cars, enjoyed drawing, and loved to tell a good joke. He was a very kind hearted man. He was preceded in death by his parents and a son Kevin Nelson. Memorials are suggested to the family's choice.
