Donald J. Leifeld, 61, of Grand Island, NE, died Saturday, January 16, 2016, at Howard County Medical Center in St. Paul, NE. Mass of the Christian Burial will be Saturday, 23, 2016, at 10 a.m., at St. Marys Cathedral. The Rev. Richard L. Piontkowski Jr. will be the celebrant. Visitation will be Friday, January 22, 2016, from 4 7 p.m. at Curran Funeral Chapel, with a vigil service at 7:00 p.m. Curran Funeral Chapel is assisting the family.
Don was born November 30, 1954, at Grand Island, NE. He was the son of Lawrence Larry J. and Francis Frankie (Wemhoff)
Leifeld.
Survivors of the immediate family include his father, Larry Leifeld of Grand Island, NE
Sisters and brothers-in-law, Joan and Bob Buffington of Centennial, CO
Jannan and Bill McLellan of Grand Island, NE
Jude and Bill Lammert of Grand Island, NE
Others left to cherish his memory include his nieces and nephews and their spouses, Trina (Brendan) Zahl, Jake (Jamie) Lammert, Levi (Sarah) Lammert, Angie (Brian) Butler, Shayla (Kyle) Nabity, Amanda (Brandon) Gunderson, Lacey Buffington, Krista (John) Shaw and numerous grandnieces and grandnephews.
Don grew up in Grand Island graduating from Grand Island Central Catholic with the class of 1973. He began working for John Claussen and Sons right out of high school. Don began his own construction business, Don Leifeld Construction, and also owned and operated D&L Trucking. Don also was an owner/trainer of thoroughbred horses racing both locally and on the west coast. Don took great pride of his two Bosselman wins with his horses Sahara King & Windys Halo.
Don was known as Uncle Don to his family & friends. He was always there to lend a hand, had a smile on his face and a prank up his sleeve. He loved the outdoors, hunting, fishing, horse racing, softball, golf, but his passions were his faith in God and his land near Palmer where he built his cabin to share memories with his family & friends.
He was a member of St. Marys Cathedral, Knights of Columbus, was a mentor for Big Brothers, Big Sisters, and a board member as well as Past President of the HPBA.
Don was preceded in death by his mother Frankie and a nephew Jason Lammert.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Grand Island Central Catholic or St. Marys Cathedral.
