Obituary

Donald A. "Donnie" Schwieger, 75, of Grand Island, Nebraska, died Friday, February 22, 2019, at Edgewood Vista. Services will be Saturday, March 2, 2019, at 11:00 a.m., at Trinity United Methodist Church. The Rev. Kelly Karges will officiate. Burial will be in Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be Friday from 5 – 7 p.m. at Curran Funeral Chapel. Memorials are suggested to The Michael J. Fox Foundation, P.O. Box 5014, Hagerstown, MD 21741-5014, www.michaeljfox.org, or to Trinity United Methodist Church. Curran Funeral Chapel is assisting the family. Donnie was born December 27, 1943, in Grand Island, Nebraska. He was the son of Art and Edna (Gosda) Schwieger. Survivors of his immediate family include his wife of 44 years, Cheri Schwieger of Grand Island, NE Sons and a daughter-in-law, Sean Schwieger of Grand Island, NE Bryan (Amber) Schwieger of Mesa, AZ Grandchildren, Jack, Charlie, Holden, and Everett Schwieger Brother, Richard "Dick" Schwieger of Superior, NE Sisters-in-law, Karen Sorensen of Grand Island, NE Georgia (Ted) Nelsen of Monroe, NE Donnie grew up in Grand Island where he attended grade school and middle school. He graduated from Grand Island Sr. High in 1962. Donnie served for a short time in the Nebraska National Guard, after which he began working for Jack and Jill as produce manager. He began his career as a food sales representative for Kohn Brothers Brokerage Firm out of Omaha. Donnie always considered himself a "peddler on the road". He married Cheri A. Sorensen on April 27, 1974, in Grand Island, NE. They lived in Grand Island where they raised their sons Sean and Bryan. Donnie was later employed at Quaker Oats Company, headquartered in Chicago. He was the Human Food Representative for the Kansas City Zone which was comprised of Nebraska and South Dakota Territory. Donnie worked for Quaker Oats for 14 years until the company restructured from direct sales force to a brokerage firm, at which time he began working as a Sales Representative for Acosta, where he retired in 2009 due to health issues. Donnie loved spending time with his children and grandchildren. He was a thoroughbred horse owner and an avid thoroughbred horse racing fan. He also enjoyed time spent fishing with his friends.
