Dixie Ann Best, 75, of Grand Island, Nebraska, died Sunday, February 26, 2017, at her home surrounded by her family. Dixie was born July 26, 1941 in Loup City, NE. She is the daughter of Charles John and Margaret (Ritz) Schwaderer. Survivors of the immediate family include her daughter and son-in-law, Sara and Dan Cox of Grand Island, NE and sons and daughters-in-law, Tom and Trudy Best of Grand Island, NE and Steve and Gina Best of Grand Island, NE. Grandchildren and their spouses, Hailee & Brent Clark, Dylan Best and fiancé Nick Herink, Payton Best, Ryan Cox and fiancée Amber Hoffman, Leah and Raece Paulsen, Brittany and Alex Romano and Cassidy and Chris Detsadachanh. Great grandchildren, Stella, Gwyneth, Jameson and numerous nieces and nephews. One brother and sister-in-law, Jim & Marcia Schwaderer of Lincoln, NE. She is preceded in death by her parents. Dixie moved to Grand Island with her family at the age of four and attended Grand Island Public Schools. She married Eli "Paul" Best on December 12, 1959, in Grand Island. They were later divorced. Dixie worked in retail management for 30 years, retiring as Human Resource Manager at Younkers in 2002. She was an active volunteer in the community serving on the Goodwill Industries Board, Council of International Visitors, P.E.O. Chapter EH, Altrusa International and past board member of the organization, Moonshell Arts and Humanitarians Council, and past president of the Grand Island Concert Association. Dixie was a woman of many interests. She enjoyed reading, playing bridge, cooking, gardening, and especially spending time with her family. She loved family events, holiday dinners and reunions. She had a passion for history, politics and sports. She is a member of the United Congregational Church, serving on the church council for many years. Services will be Thursday, March 2, 2017, at 11:00 a.m. at the United Congregational Church. The Rev. Lonnie Logan and Pastor David Butz will officiate. Visitation will be Wednesday, March 1, 2017, from 4 – 7 p.m. at Curran Funeral Chapel. Cremation will follow the services, and inurnment will be in Evergreen Cemetery in Loup City, NE at a later date. Memorials are suggested to the United Congregational Church or Salvation Army.
