Obituary

Carolyn G. Sokol, 94, of Riverside Lodge, in Grand Island, Nebraska, died Thursday, January 5, 2012, at St. Francis Medical Center. Services will be Tuesday, January 10, 2012, at 10:00 a.m. at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church. The Rev. Joseph K. Joseph, Rev. Jacob F. Bauer, & Rev. Harlan Waskowiak will concelebrate. Burial will be in the Grand Island City Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 7 p.m. at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church with a vigil rosary service at 7:00 p.m. Curran Funeral Chapel is assisting the family. Carolyn was born in rural Elba, Nebraska (Howard County) on October 21, 1917. She was the daughter of Stanley & Catherine Kate (Otlewski) Schachta. Survivors of the immediate family include a daughter, Gertrude Trudy Lazure of Omaha, NE One daughter-in-law, Margaret Maggi Sokol of Mt. Prospect, IL One sister Dorothy Tenski of Grand Island, NE Carolyn grew up in Howard County before moving to Sherman County in 1920. She attended District 5 and later Loup City Public Schools. She helped on the family farm. She married Adam Richard Sokol on February 4, 1936 at St. Josephat Catholic Church in Loup City, Nebraska. She moved to a farm north east of Loup City until 1959. They moved to Merrick County in 1959 and farmed north of Clarks. Carolyn was an active member of St. Peters Catholic Church and a Religious Education teacher for 11 years and found such joy in watching children learn. She was 4 H leader for 11 years. The Sokols retired to Grand Island in 1973. Carolyn cooked at a local caf for a short time before becoming a long time employee at Allens Grocery Store. She was produce manager until her retirement in 1982. Mr. Sokol died April 27, 2000. She was a member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, its altar society, Catholic Daughters of Americas, Queen of Peace #2227, where she helped lead the rosary at funeral visitations. She provided foods for funeral dinners and enjoyed the Sunset Dinners. When asked, Carolyn always made herself available. She was a 25 plus year volunteer for the American Red Cross Blood Mobile and a regular Cancer Center patient visitor. She loved sharing her hope with others. Memorials are suggested to the, Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, American Cancer Society or the donors choice. She was preceded in death by her husband, Adam Sokol, one son, Richard Thomas Sokol, a son-in-law, Charles Lazure, one brother, Isadore Schachta, and three sisters and five brothers-in-law, Frances & Frank Davis, Lucille & Ray Lewandowski, Emily & Henry Janulewicz, Joe Tenski & Ed Waskowiak and a sister-in-law, Jean Janulewicz.
