Survivors of her immediate family include two sisters and a brother-in-law:
Lillian Grant of Valparaiso, NE
Francis & Kenneth Mays of Overland Park, KS
Several nieces and nephews.
Bessie grew up in Deweese receiving her education there. She began working in cafes at the age of eleven, washing dishes then waitressing and later as a cook. She moved to Superior, NE and that is where she met the love of her life Charles O. Stewart. They married in Colorado and later moved to Kansas where they owned and operated a bar. They moved to Shelton, NE and Bessie ran the Swiss Caf. Mr. Stewarts work took them to Cozad and Wray, CO, before he quit the construction business and joined Bessie as owner/operator of a small caf in Holdrege, NE. They later purchased the tavern and caf in Ravenna, NE. They sold that business after several years and returned to Shelton, NE where they purchased the Motor Inn. Mr. Stewart died in 1974. Bessie continued to operate the Motor Inn. She married Glen J. Jack Garrett and they lived in Shelton. She was known from coast to coast because of the people who stopped to eat her delicious cooking and homemade pies. She will be missed by all. Mr. Garrett died on January 14, 1989. Bessie retired, selling the business after Glens death.
Bessie especially enjoyed cooking for family, spending time in the kitchen whether cooking, baking, or just doing dishes. She also enjoyed knitting, needlepoint and crocheting.
Memorials are suggested to the familys choice.
She is welcomed into heaven by her parents, husbands, Charles O. Stewart & Glen J. Garrett, four sisters, Mary Kinchloe, Anna Elteste, Helen Barta, Julia Fiedler, two brothers, James & Jospeh Klauz.
